2 Why this? Why now? New Common Core Standards give us an opportunity to reflect upon and refresh our curriculum Working together to share ideas/inspiration/best practices Who better to write curriculum than the people who teach in our schools

3 Reorienting our thinking Starting with the Standards Making the standards the centerpiece supported by our programs Thinking about the diverse needs of students and planning for differentiation in our core instruction Enriching our curriculum with Web sites, Smart Board lessons, literature, and hands-on activities

4 Curriculum and MCAS 2013 MCAS questions will be based on the MA 2011 Frameworks To prepare students, teachers need to teach to MA Frameworks New Frameworks give us an opportunity to write a standards-based curriculum

5 Elements of Curriculum Map Unit Name or Theme Essential Questions Standards Concepts and Core Content Learning Objectives Activities Common Assessments, Formative & Summative Pacing Guide Resources including literature and Web sites Vocabulary

6 Goals Summer 2012 Curriculum outline for ELA and Math (elem.) and ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies (MS/HS) Curriculum Pacing Guide Assessments Units to address standards which will be tested on 2013 MCAS Units and lessons that will align with our programs Plan for fall PD for colleagues Plan for work to take place during 2012 – 2013 school year.

7 Goals 2012-2013 School Year Teachers who participate in the project will provide professional development for their colleagues. Continued writing of the curriculum.

8 Goals Summer 2013 Continue writing standards-based curriculum maps. Extend writing into elementary science and social studies.

9 10 Elementary teachers will write maps for ELA and math. 8 Middle and High School teachers will write maps for ELA, math, science, and social studies. Who will participate?

10 When and Where? Two 4-day weeks: June 25 - 28 August 13 - 16 Seven hour days, 8:30 – 3:30 One hour for breaks and lunch Location – Mohawk Trail Regional High School

11 Compensation $20 per hour 56 hours - maximum number of hours for summer work Total $1120 per teacher

12 Application Process Application includes: Letter of interest addressed to principal. One complete unit you have created and taught. Administrative Council will meet to select participants.

13 Application Process and Planning Meetings Applications due by Tues., March 20. Teachers will be invited by Thurs., March 29. Teachers will need to reply by Tues., April 3. Tues., April 10 – 1:00 – 3:00 Planning meeting for participating teachers Tues., May 8 – 1:00 – 3:00 Planning meeting for participating teachers
