2. What’s The Big Deal? The United Nations has made one of its Millennium Goals be Environmental Sustainability. “Sustainability refers to a quality and system of life that allows people to meet their current needs without compromising the resources available for future generations to meet their future needs.” Environmental Sustainability involves the improvement in: Access to drinking safe drinking water Poverty Starvation Deforestation Sanitation Renewable sources of energy Distribution of Fossil Fuels Many others.

6. Supporting the Chart Solution Access to drinking water must be improved, but how? o Manage demand for water o Preserve groundwater. o Improve toilets and waster disposal. If Albania could use these step to increase their per year increase from 1% to 3%, then they will reach 95% by 2015, which is much more respectable than 82%. Problem The chart on the previous slide indicates just one example of the impact we can have on our environment if we start today. Albania has seen an increase from 69% to 75% of access to safe drinking water in six years, which translates to a 1% increase per year. o At this rate Albania will not reach its 98% goal by 2015. Instead it will be a measly 82%.

7. Summary Altogether Environmental Sustainability is a reachable goal that the world must strive to achieve. The world is experience problems with: o Increasing population o Lack of fossil fuels o Lack of access to drinking water o Rising poverty o Lack of sanitation o Deforestation o Starvation o Etc. Steps must be taken to alleviate these issues, such as the Albania example, and to make improvement to produce Environmental Sustainability.
