Tsunam is Waves of Destruction

As a part of your research, your STAR team has monitored and investigated geologic activity around Earth. Your group has reviewed data from Unimak, an island in the Aleutian chain of Alaska.

The data reveals that in 1946 a large earthquake shook the remote, steel-reinforced concrete Scotch Cap lighthouse which stood about 100 feet above the North Pacific Ocean.

Minutes later a huge wave wiped out the lighthouse, leaving practically no trace of the five Coast Guardsmen inside.

Five hours later, additional data about the geologic events showed that the powerful wave that destroyed the Scotch Cap lighthouse rolled across the Pacific Ocean heading towards Hilo, Hawaii.

When the tsunami finally diminished, the waterfront of Hilo was completely destroyed and over 150 people had died. This is just one example of the destruction caused by tsunamis.

In this investigation, you will discover the causes of tsunamis and explain how they shape Earth’s surface. When you have completed this investigation, you should be able to describe the formation of tsunamis in order to explain how tsunamis affect the surface of the earth.

Reread the introduction. Predict what might cause a tsunami. Type your answer in the box.

Read the article your teacher will give you titled “Waves of Destruction.”

Reread the article. Toggle to a program to create a graphic organizer to outline the main points of the reading. Save/print. What software did you select? Explain why you selected that software to show your learning.

View the animation of a tsunami by clicking the button:

Toggle to a program to make a drawing or take notes on the steps involved in the formation of a tsunami. Save/print. What software did you select? Explain why you selected that software to show your learning.

Click on the button to create a sequence chain to show the steps involved in the formation of a tsunami. When finished, save/print.

Make sure to save this presentation to the correct location using an appropriate file name.
