5 What are Infographics?

6 Infographics are visual representations of data or information used to explain complex concepts. Why Focus on Infographics? Students are consumers of large numbers of infographics and complex visual texts through online media.

13 Teaching About and With Infographics Goal: help students distill the most important pieces of information from any given text and form a conclusion. What is the main conclusion or story you can identify from the graphic? What do the numbers in the graphic represent, i.e. what are the units? Where did the data come from, and how was it collected? How are the numbers/data in the graphic represented? (E.g., does the author use graphs, charts, maps, etc.? Do they use color, pattern, size, or position to communicate about the data?) What questions do you have about the graphic? What confuses you? What do you like and dislike about the graphic? Students should learn to analyze and interpret infographics before developing their own.
