)) Headright System Headright System: Plantation owners were given 50 acres for every indentured servant they sponsored to come to America. Indentured Contract Indentured Contract: Served plantation owner for 7 years as a laborer in return for passage to America. Freedom Dues Freedom Dues: Once servant completed his contract, he/she was freed….They were given land, tools, seed and animals. However, they did not receive voting rights.

(II) CAUSES OF BACON’S REBELLION (In a nutshell) a. Power in the Virginia colony rested in the hands of a few and royal governor (William Berkeley) did not protect the farmers along the James River from Indian attacks b. Native American raids on land because of unfair trade between the English and tribes c. Bacon goes to Governor Berkeley to voice his complaints d. Berkeley creates a defensive zone around Virginia and colonists have to pay for protection through taxes e. Bacon starts war with the Natives (first rebellion in colonies) f. Bacon creates the “Declaration of the People of Virginia LET’S READ IT NOW SHALL WE???
a.Nathaniel Bacon acts as the representative for rebels (led 1,000 Virginians including: indentured servants, poor farmers and even slaves! in a rebellion against Berkeley) Berkeley monopolized the fur trade with the Indians in the area. Berkeley refused to retaliate for Indian attacks on frontier settlements. b.Gov. Berkeley refused to meet their conditions and erupts into a civil war. c.Bacon dies, Gov. Berkeley puts down rebellion and several rebels are hung ( III) The Rebellion Itself
IV. MAJOR RESULT OF REBELLION a. Move away from using indentured servants as labor to using SLAVES as labor (slaves would not demand equality and fairness )
