The Rock Cycle

Aim: How are the Earth’s rocks recycled?

Rock Cycle Diagram

The Rock Cycle The Rock Cycle The slowest of the earth’s cyclic processes. Factors that determine which rock is made: Time, Pressure, and Earth’s heat Three basic types of rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic

Sedimentary Forms when sediments of eroded rock, animal, and/or plants build up and compress due to pressure of the layers on top of eachother Ex: river carries sediments down a river and unload them at the delta where those layers compress due to the weight above Ex: limestone, Britain

Metamorphic Created when previously made rocks are pushed deep into earth’s mantle & are put under high levels of pressure and heat Ex: subduction zone pushes ocean sediments deep into earth and the heat and pressure in the mantle changes the sed. rock to met. Ex: Oman, Jordan

Igneous Heat and pressure below the crust melt a rock into magma then pressure builds up as plates move & magma builds up. When enough pressure builds, the magma erupts from a volcano as lava and resolidifies as an igneous rock Ex: basalt Gabbro The Black Cuillin mountains

Why it’s a cycle: Rock from any of these classes can be converted to rock of either of the other two classes, or can be recycled within its own class

Rock Cycle Diagram

The rock cycle demonstrates the relationships among the three major rock groups It is powered by the interior heat of the Earth As well as earth’s momentum and… The energy from the sun It involves processes on the Earth’s surface as well as the Earth’s interior It connects the “hydrologic cycle” with the “tectonic cycle”. In Conclusion…

Summary What are three ways in which the rock cycle benefits your lifestyle?
