Rhetorical Terms and Strategies Project Getting ready for AP Literature

Objective Demonstrate knowledge of AP Rhetorical Terms and Strategies.

What are rhetorical terms and strategies? Rhetoric is the art of using language to communicate effectively. Rhetorical terms and strategies are the means by which writers and speakers use words and language to persuade. The AP Language and Composition Exam places strong emphasis on students’ ability to analyze texts rhetorically and to use rhetoric effectively as they compose essay responses.

Project Details With a partner, you will be assigned 5 terms to teach the class during a specific week this school year. You will create the following: A presentation that teaches the class about your assigned terms using both definitions and examples - Monday A practice worksheet that develops a deeper understanding of the terms - Wednesday A quiz that tests the class’ knowledge of the terms - Thursday Test questions for the Semester Final Exam – Friday

Presentation An effective presentation will: Be projected via a laptop (mine or your own) Be clear, informative, factual and easy for students to learn from! Use PowerPoint, or any other presentations tools, such as Prezi, Keynote or Movie Maker. Remember…. The more creative and engaging you are, the more likely the class will actually LEARN your terms. And the better they learn your terms, the better the grade you will receive!

Keep in Mind You are in charge of teaching the class these terms, so you need to think creatively. What strategies can you use to get their attention? Do you plan to simply have the class take notes on the terms or is there a better way for them to learn the information? What will your worksheet look like and what types of test questions will you develop?

You will be graded on the quality and effectiveness of your: Presentation – 30 points Practice worksheet – 20 points Quiz – 20 points Test questions – 20 points Binder – 200 points

Extra Credit Opportunity To earn an automatic 20 points extra credit, you and your partner can volunteer to present during the first or second week of January. If more than 2 teams are interested in the extra credit opportunity, then names will be drawn. All other partner groups will randomly select a presentation week and may end up with the 3 rd week of January through the end of May.

Portfolio Binder You are also required to create a Vocabulary & Terms Portfolio Binder. For this portion of the project, you must bring a 1.5” binder and dividers to class by Monday, 12/13. This binder will store all of your rhetorical terms and vocabulary notes. This binder will also serve as a study tool for both English 10 Honors and AP Literature. You will be graded on the binder’s completeness and organization.

So how do we get started? Once you and your partner know your assigned terms, it is time to start studying them in depth. Go online and research all you can about those 5 terms. Learn them inside and out. Find great examples so that you can teach your peers what these terms truly mean. Develop a strategy for how you want to teach the class. Start now! Don’t wait until the last minute!
