Deforestation DAVID MYERS KEVIN HERNADEZ

What is Deforestation Deforestation is the destruction of natural forest to serve another purpose Increase of human population causes more land to be destroyed This effects the all stages of living species making some go endangered. This also effects the tribal people that rely on the natural resources.

Examples Human causes Logging Slash and burning Clearing land for live stock grazing Mining operations Oil extraction Dam building Population expansion Naturally occurring Wild fires burn a large selection of forest every year. This can be natural or accidental. Wildfire can prevent the growth of young trees.

Amazon More than half of the world's species of plants and animals live in this rainforest. 90% of Amazon plants used by Amazon natives have not been studied. In 1500 there were estimated 6 to 9 million Amazon natives. By 1900 the numbers went down to 1 million. Now the population is estimated at 250,000 Amazon natives. Fifty or so Amazon tribes living in the rainforest that have not been contacted by the outside world.

Effects on Environment The deforestation effects the biodiversity of the forest. Makes all the animals move closer to civilization, causing many animals to become a nuisance which may cause some species to be pushed to the brink of extinction. The climate and temperature. Temperature may rise The regions sometimes get pushed to desert like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrAkd8Ee5so

Facts about Deforestation The total rainforest of Brazil (Atlantic coast) has been reduced by about 90-95%. If this rate of deforestation continues the same way as today, the rainforests will be completely cleared within the next 100 years. Logging itself results in 32 million acres of natural forests destroyed every year Forests cover about 30% of Earth's surface-but each year about 13 million hectares of forest (78,000 square miles) Nebraska, or four times the size of Costa Rica are destroyed for agricultural uses. On an average, 60 hectares (measurement of land) of rainforest are cut down per minute, which results to 86,000 hectares destroyed per day.rainforest
