Development of Athletic Statistical Analysis Tools (ASAT) ETM5121 Proposal Submitted by Kenny Coker

Slide2 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Introduction Four others and myself decided to form a company The name of the company is Advanced Athletic Technologies. The first product that we are developing is the Athletic Statistical Analysis Tool (ASAT).

Slide4 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Problem Statement The world of athletics is growing increasingly competitive. The difference between competing athletes can be difficult to measure. Currently trainers must keep a log of hand written data on each athlete’s performance and then enter this data into a spreadsheet.

Slide5 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Measures Of The Problem Technical The mechanics of a runner includes 8 data points. ASAT is capable of measuring movement and provide rate data. The measurements for movement will be in singular milliseconds. Management Schedules will be measured in days. Schedules will be aggressive (a confidence level of being 50% successful). Individual tasks will not be given days for slippage until all components of the critical path are understood.

Slide6 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Project Objectives Develop a tool that aids in solving the problem of measuring athletic capability. Provide trainers with a tool that has the ability to monitor an athlete’s performance without the need to manually record data. Data is formatted in such a way that it can be referenced against other measurements taken with this tool Prototype will be completed and ready for testing by the end of the calendar year.

Slide7 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Specific Deliverables An automated log of an athlete’s performance The trainer will not have to manually input data into a database or spreadsheet. History of an athlete’s performance A history of past performance can be collected to show trends in performance. Comparison to other athletes Results from test can be compared with less variation.

Slide8 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Alternatives To Be Considered (1) Blue Tooth Wide acceptance of this communication protocol. There are many companies that offer tools for designing communication systems using Blue Tooth protocol. A con to this approach is that the range is only 10 yards.

Slide9 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Alternatives To Be Considered (2) DTMF encoded over Family Band Radio Uses technology that is inexpensive and widely available. Some processors have built in DTMF encoders and decoders. The range for this technology is between one and two miles. Will have a slower transmission rate than other alternatives.

Slide10 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Alternatives To Be Considered (3) Build low power FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) transmitter and receiver FM transmitters and receivers are very inexpensive. There may be licensing issues required if the range of 50 yards is reached. The combination of transmitter and receiver may be too large to satisfy the size requirement needs.

Slide11 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Alternatives To Be Considered (4) Find a wireless data acquisition system that will satisfy the needs of ASAT Must be capable of measuring at least eight different sensors Must transmit data a minimum of 10 yards. Must be small enough to be worn by an athlete Cost less than $4000

Slide12 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Project Approach and Criteria for Evaluating Alternatives A Kepner-Tregoe Analysis using these criteria: Quality Function Deployment (QFD) chart will be used to evaluate each alternative’s ability to satisfy the customer Determine the cost associated with each alternative. Cost must be less than $4000. Determine when the prototype will be ready to present to potential customers

Slide13 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Project Schedule

Slide14 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Planned Use Of ETM material IEM 5113 TQM The development of a QFD and the strategies on how to identify the needs of the customer. ETM 5251 Problem Solving and decision-making A KT analysis is key to deciding which alternative will be pursued. ETM 5231 Benchmarking The use of wireless technology in factory tooling is the bases for the general concept. This idea uses the disc drive industry as a benchmark for determining how to instrument and measure mechanical processes.

Slide15 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Planned Use Of ETM material ETM 5241 Strategic Project Management A PERT chart will be used to determine the critical path in the project. It will also be used to identify when a task has slipped far enough to affect the critical path. IEM 5823 Performance Management and Improvement Understanding the dynamics of organizations will be key in maintaining momentum and minimizing internal strife between members in this company.

Slide16 7/16/2003ETM 5121 Planned Use Of ETM material IEM 5743 Information Systems and Technology Data warehouses and data mining are a main selling points for this product. IEM 5503 Finance and Capital Investment Analysis A cost analysis of the product’s design and development will be necessary before capital can be requested.
