1 Harlem Renaissance- This “Harlem Renaissance” is referring to a time period in the 1930’s when African American culture expanded in many forms of the arts. Including Art,Music,Writing,Dancing.

3  Gwendolyn Brooks  Gwendolyn Brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1917 and raised in Chicago. She is the author of more than twenty books of poetry.  She also wrote numerous other books including a novel, Maud Martha.  In 1968 she was named Poet Laureate for the state of Illinois, and from 1985-86 she was Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. She also received an American Academy of Arts

4  “ We’re real cool ”  We real cool. We  Left school. We  Lurk late. We  Strike straight. We  Sing sin. We  Thin gin. We  Jazz June. We  Die soon.

5 o Main Idea: The main idea of “We’re real cool” is the lifestyle and things they did in the Harlem Renaissance culture. o Tone: Serious-The poem “We’re real cool” shows a serious tone of who and what the people of the Harlem Renaissance are. o For an example: "We're real cool. We left school. o Literary/poetic devices 1)Rhythm-” Sing sin. We Thin gin.” 2)Repetition-She repeats the word “We" For emphasis.

6  “The Graveyard Poem”  It was the greatest night of my life.  Although I still had not found a wife  I had my friends  Right there beside me.  We were close together.  We tripped the wall and we scaled the graveyard  Ancient shapes were all around us.  The wet dew felt fresh beside the fog.  Two made love in an ancient spot  One chased a rabbit into the dark  A girl got drunk and balled the dead  And I gave empty sermons to my head.  Cemetery, cool and quiet  Hate to leave your sacred lay  Dread the milky coming of the day.  -This Poem talking about the Jim and his friends hanging out and just living life and taking that and making it into a interesting poem.

7  The Poem “We real cool” shows the lifestyle and ideology of the Harlem Renaissance. The part of the poem that says “Jazz June. We  Die soon". This part directly relates to the 60’s youth of the music scene of living young and dying young or also could be known as the “27 Club” for an example.  She says “We” often in the poem to represent what they did in the Harlem Renaissance together.
