3. What is “The New Negro”? Someone who: Claims own social identity Creates a unique cultural identity Is Bold Has pride in heritage Rejects stereotypes Politically active against segregation and lynching

4. What are the results? Paved the way for civil rights movement of the ’50s and ’60s African American art begins to take a prominent place in culture Influenced modernism

5. What is tone? The author’s attitude toward the subject. We can tell a lot from a person’s tone of voice. Tone is the way the author gets their attitude across. Let’s try a few examples…

6. “How it Feels to Be Colored Me” Zora Neale Hurston What is the essay about? What does she say about herself? How does she say it? What language does she use? What is her tone?

7. POETRY TIME!!!! We will divide into groups. In your groups you will answer a few questions. Pick a recorder. Turn in ONE answer sheet for the group. Use textual support for your ideas. Enjoy this amazing and beautiful poetry!
