2 Mobilizing For War US on the Home Front

3 Men needed to Fight Selective Service Act - First peacetime draft in US history (1940) Men between 18 - 45 had to register 15 million Americans served in the military 1 million Blacks 300,000 Mexican-Americans

4 War is Good for the Economy Depression ends when war industries start up US needs jeeps, tanks, planes, guns, and other supplies Incomes rise, unemployment fell

5 War Production Board (WPB) Supervised conversion of factories to wartime production No cars were built in the early 40’s

6 Scrap Drives US needed rubber, metal and other goods Govt. organized nationwide scrap drives

8 Rationing In order to control amounts of needed goods, the government limited what each family could buy Rationed items included meat, gas, coffee, shoes
