7 Indian Tribes Choctaw Indians Lived in the Southeast region The Choctaw are native to the Southeastern United States and members of the Muskogean linguistic family, which traces its roots to a mound-building, maize-based society that flourished in the Mississippi River Valley for more than a thousand years before European contact Forcibly removed from Mississippi to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears Sixteen years later, in 1847, they sent $170 in donations to the Irish poor who were starving due to the Potato Famine (diseased 1845-1849). Although other crops were being grown, they were marked for export by the British rulers. Chumash Indians Lived in the California region The Chumash Indians were able to enjoy a more prosperous environment than most other tribes in California because they had resources from both the land and the sea With an oral tradition, much history was lost when the Chumash Indian population was all but decimated in the 1700s and 1800s by the Spanish mission system

8 Indian Tribes Comanche Lived in the Great Plains region They are the stereotype Indian living in teepees and going to war. Comanche is the Ute word for “enemy” In their language, they call themselves Numinu (the people) Cheyenne Indians Lived in the Great Plains region The U.S. government forced the Cheyenne to move to Oklahoma during the 1800's, but some escaped and fled north into Montana. Today there are two Cheyenne tribes, one in Oklahoma and the other in Montana. Their government was lead by 4 from each tribe and ALL had to agree before action could be taken (consensus).

9 Apache Indians Lived in the Southwest region Around the 1730s, the Apache Indians began to battle with the Spaniards. The battles were long and bloody, and often resulted in many deaths. Finally in 1743 a Spanish leader agreed to designate areas of Texas for the Apaches to live, easing the battle over land. In a ceremony in 1749, an Apache chief buried a hatchet to symbolize that the fighting was over, thus the term we use today, “bury the hatchet.”
