IPY Summary IPY 1 1881 to 1884 1st coordinated international effort Focus on meteorology and geophysics Other events in history Jesse James is killed, Twain publishes Huckleberry Finn, Picasso is born, American Red Cross is established by Clara Barton IPY 2 1932 to 1933 Scientifically, still focused on meteorology, scientific process Deliberate choice for one calendar year for IPY Events in history Great Depression, Lindbergh’s son kidnapped, FBI Crime Lab and Radio City Music Hall open, FDR’s first “Fireside Chats”, Construction begins for Golden Gate Bridge IPY 3 = IGY 1957 tp 1958 Interest in ice depths develops Events in history Sputnik launches, “Leave it to Beaver” premieres, Pink Flamingos are manufactured, “The Music Man” opens on Broadway, TANG breakfast crystals first introduced, the Jim Henson company is founded IPY 4 2007 to 2009 Provides two research seasons at each pole Projects >200 People >50,000 Countries >60 First IPY to focus on social issues Next Antarctica Treat Summit occurs during IPY 4

“comfortable” and “familiar” easy to use extensive results but…. best resources often missed

Site Selection Many, many sites - often specialized, and not obviously targeted to classroom use. Need to be a polar expert to select best search terms These sites represent best cumulative pools and best starting points. List is not comprehensive Sites are broader in scope rather than specialized in content Many link to specialty data and information

Selection Criteria Accuracy Reliable, free from error Authority Author is known, credentials available, publisher is reputable Objectivity Information is free of bias, controversial statements represent both sides, no hidden agenda Currency Information is up-to-date, updates are identified Coverage topics are thoroughly and adequately covered; breadth of coverage is sufficient for website’s purpose
