1 Climate Change Topic: Prehistoric Climate Change Cause of climate change: carbon dioxide emission Solution to climate change: reducing carbon dioxide emission through personal actions

2 Math Standards Addressed: Algebra 1 Standards: 5.0 Students solve multi step problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step. Grade 6: AF 2.1 Convert one unit of measurement to another (e.g., from feet to miles, from centimeters to inches). Grade 6: AF 1.4 Solve problems manually by using the correct order of operations or by using a scientific calculator. Grade 7: AF 1.5 Represent quantitative relationships graphically and interpret the meaning of a specific part of a graph in the situation represented by the graph. Grade 7: NS 1.3 Convert fractions to decimals and percents and use these representations in estimations, computations, and applications.

3 Technology-based Tool: GeoGebra Students use GeoGebra to graph linear equations and inequalities. Using the graphs, students consider different scenarios. The line that describes the relationship between the percentage of smooth edge leaves and average annual temperature is reproduced using GeoGebra. Using the given y-intercept and two points on the line, students write an equation of the line.

4 Assessment: Students set personal goal to reduce carbon dioxide emission. Choose two actions from carbon dioxide emission quiz (ex. Turning off water when brushing teeth and turning off the lights for one hour when you are not in the room) Write an equation (ex. 67x + 274 = 2000) Graph the equation using GeoGebra and answer follow- up questions. (ex. Graph y = 67x + 274) Write a paragraph describing two things learned about climate change and actions that can be taken to reduce carbon dioxide emission.
