2 Today’s Agenda  Opener: What is a Newton?  Unit 1: Sports Project Presentations  Build A Rube GoldBerg  Closure: Identify energy transformations in a Rube Goldberg. (honors) Assignment: Read Chapter 32 on Electrostatics.

3 Goals  Make a presentation for Unit 1: Sports  Identify transformations of energy in a Rube Goldberg

4 Big Idea: Objects that move in translational motion are described in terms of position, velocity, and acceleration.  Concept: The position, velocity, and acceleration of an object can be measured and quantified (in magnitude and direction), using appropriate tools and units, in a reference frame.

5 Big Idea: All forces arise from the interactions between different objects.  Concept: When two surfaces of objects are in contact with each other, the force of friction between them depends on the nature of the materials in contact and the normal force.

6 Big Idea: Forces can act upon an object to change the position, direction, and/or speed of its motion. Concept: Newton’s three laws of motion can be used to explain and measure the motion of objects.

7 Big Idea: The rotational motion of objects is described in terms of angular position, angular velocity, and angular acceleration.  Concept: A rotating reference frame can give the appearance of an object constrained to travel in a circular path which gives a centripetal acceleration directed from the object toward the center of the rotating reference frame.

8 Big Idea: All changes in rotational motion are due to torques.  Concept: Torque is the rotational analogue of force for translational motion. The lesson on center of mass helped you lay the foundation for this concept.

9 Standards PA Standard 3.2.12.B1: “Analyze the principles of rotational motion to solve problems relating to angular momentum and torque.” The concept of circular motion helped you to meet this standard in later Physics courses. PA Standard 3.2.10.B1: “Analyze the relationships among the net force acting on a body, the mass of the body, and the resulting acceleration using Newton’s Second Law of Motion.” PA Standard 3.2.P.B6: “Use Newton’s laws of motion and gravitation to describe and predict the motion of objects ranging from atoms to the galaxies.” PA Standard 3.2.10.B1: “Analyze the relationships among the net forces acting on a body, the mass of the body, and the resulting acceleration using Newton’s Second Law of Motion.” PA Standard 3.2.10.B1: “Use Newton’s 3 rd Law to explain forces as interactions between bodies.”
