Webcast production & archiving Universitat Jaume I Ing. Informatica CERN ETT-DH End Summer Presentations 16 August 2001, CERN Hector Sanchez San Martin

Hector Sanchez16 August 2001 @ CERN Contents Background introduction Main objectives (archiving & producing) Improvements Problems & future development

Hector Sanchez16 August 2001 @ CERN Background introduction Webcast service WLAP: Web Lecture Archive Project Pilot project started by IT division Delivering of video through the Internet (webcast): CERN events Implement an e-archival system for slide based lectures on the Internet CDS http://multimedia.cern.ch Video (RealMedia) Slides(Graphic) Timing (Text file) Syncomatic

Hector Sanchez Main objectives 16 August 2001 @ CERN Archiving Long term, metadata and a systematic procedure to store it Avoids time, place, availability constraints Digital archive delivered through the Internet Production of Web Lectures Keep delivering WL for future events

Hector Sanchez Improvements: First scenario 16 August 2001 @ CERN Enter metadataContact speakerSet up EquipmentInstall timing SWRecordEdit videoSynchroniseSyncomatUploadWeb PublishingObtain slidesTake timing WLAPer Organiser Digitalise WLAPer Video service

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Key points 16 August 2001 @ CERN Archiving for long term Scenario analysis deduced problems No systematic method, non scaleable data formats, no metadata Dependency on one person People working in non-specialised tasks  loose of quality Process is VERY heavy and manual Tasks repeated Re-organise the process

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Process obtained 16 August 2001 @ CERN Enter metadataContact speakerSet up Equipment Start timing SW RecordDigitaliseEdit videoSynchroniseSyncomatUploadWeb PublishingObtain slidesTake timing Video serviceWLAPer OrganiserWLAPer

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Data flow 16 August 2001 @ CERN Organiser Launcher AGE DB Agenda Maker lecture metadata Speaker notice e-material & enrich data metadata WLAPerVideo srvc talk id file WEBCAST Encoder talk id raw timing file raw digital video WLAPer AGE DB Downloader talk id lecture file lecture slides raw timing file raw digital video PRODUCTION PC raw timing file lecture slides digital video Synchr. 9 Hector Sanchez Improvements: Architecture 16 August 2001 @ CERN Technology used: Python FTP, HTTP, mySQL, TK, COM modules used encoding upload Video editor Rmeditor download syncomat Power Point launcher Real Producer command line command line Agenda mySQL ActiveX dowloader archiver ActiveX HTTP Doc webserver Webcast pcwebc02 Production PC Laptop Tk Multiplatform, OO, high level, modular

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Results (I) 16 August 2001 @ CERN Archiving for long term A systematic archiving procedure has been set up Metadata is kept in the Agenda Maker DB  library DB Certain long term availability is guaranteed  we keep RAW data Benefits from the re-organised process Process is more distributed  autonomy Process is more specialised  better quality Many tasks have been reviewed and automated  simpler Process is more transparent to actors  less errors Faster availability  Raw material: 1 min; Web Lecture:1/2 hour

Hector Sanchez Improvements: Results (II) 16 August 2001 @ CERN New services offered Tested process: SSL 2001 95% of the lectures have been correctly archived and synchronised Only video, printable slides, downloadable version, search,… Estimated reduction to 30% New website for webcast.cern.ch

Hector Sanchez Problems & future development 16 August 2001 @ CERN Process is (sometimes) still too heavy When not PPT timing has to be taken manually  Autotiming?? Long term archiving Keeping raw data allow us to adapt to technological changes The master format has to be “convertible”  RealMedia?? Syncomat output is not scalable New efforts in having a description format independent: SMIL, LO CERN service??  Dedicated & Permanent support The set up could be reduced  Permanent PC in the MA??
