THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM MR. ROYER
2
FOOD AND NUTRIENTS Digestion- is the process of breaking down food into a form your body can use. Most of digestion occurs in the stomach and small intestine. Nutrients- are substances in food that our body needs to work properly. After they are digested the nutrients are absorbed into the blood. The blood delivers the nutrients to the cells in your body. Cells use the nutrients to grow, repair themselves and get energy.
3
WASTE REMOVAL Large intestine- absorbs water and salts from the remaining food. Solid waste- is the parts of food the body cannot use. Solid waste leaves the body through the anus as a bowel movement.
4
NON DIGESTIVE WASTE REMOVAL Cellular waste- is carried away by the blood to the kidneys. The kidneys produce urine which is liquid waste. The Respiratory system removes a waste gas called carbon dioxide when we exhale during breathing. Our skin removes another form of waste. Salt and water are removed from your body when you sweat.
