Activity Safety Scenarios:
A lab scenario will be displayed on the board. You have 30 seconds to write down anything that could have been done differently according to Lab Safety rules before the next scenario will appear. There will be 9 scenarios.

Scenario #1 The teacher was not in the room yet. Jake began weighing chemicals, touching them with his hands. His nose itched, so he rubbed it.

Scenario #2 Heather and Jennifer were absent the day before when the investigation was discussed. While they shared a muffin, they gathered the materials and watched their classmates to see what to do, and then they began the investigation.

Scenario #3 Sam was heating a test tube. He didn’t put on his safety goggles since he was wearing scratch resistant glasses. He slanted the tube away from his work area, but toward students on the opposite side of the lab bench.

Scenario #4 Cindy broke a test tube. She carefully picked up the broken pieces and placed them carefully into the garbage can.

Scenario #5 Jim and Jane were going to be late for their next class so they just left their lab station with spilled solution on the counter, and they did not put away their materials.

Scenario #6 Gina did not pay attention when the teacher was explaining where the lab safety equipment was. She thought to herself, “Oh, I’ll never need that.”

Scenario #7 Tim and Tina did not label their beakers of solution. Tim suggested to Tina that they start sniffing them and try to match with someone who had labeled their beakers of solutions.

Scenario #8 Henry asked a classmate across the lab bench if he could borrow a writing utensil. His classmate threw the utensil, knocking over a beaker of chemical. Henry cleaned the spilled material with paper towel.

Scenario #9 John made a weak solution of sulfuric acid for his acid rain project. He did not tighten the lid on the concentrated sulfuric acid jar because he knew Sara was going to use it as well. When Sara grabbed the jar, the lid came off, and acid spilled all over her hands and arms. While she cried, “I’m melting, I’m melting,” the majority of her classmates either laughed or ran out of the room. John, being a quick and smart thinker, found a corresponding jar of concentrated base and threw it on Sara.
