Organization of American States’ Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) REEfFix programme Workshop Coastal and Marine Activities done and ongoing under several Climate Change Projects conducted through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) Venue: Fisheries Division’s Conference Room Date: January 11-12, 2010 Presenter Ottis Joslyn Environmental Scientist

Organization of American States’ Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) REEfFix programme Workshop Mainstreaming Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) and Special Programme for Adaptation to Climate Change (SPACC) Projects MACC Project Implemented the Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) Methodology on the Water Resources Sector in specific units of analysis; namely, Cumberland Watershed, and the two Grenadine islands, Bequia and Union Island Outputs: Implemented a KAP survey in the Cumberland Watershed, on Bequia and on Union Island Produce Static Risk Maps using GIS technology Conducted a hydrology assessment of the Cumberland Watershed and a water resources assessment on Bequia and Union Island Conducted a Climate Assessment of St. Vincent and the Grenadines with weather data from ET Joshua airport

SPACC Project The Project Development Objective To support efforts by St. Vincent and the Grenadines to implement specific (integrated) pilot adaptation measures addressing primarily, the impacts o f climate change on their natural resource base, focused on biodiversity and land degradation along coastal and near-coastal areas This will be achieved through: (i)The detailed design of pilot adaptation measures to reduce expected negative impacts of climate change on marine and terrestrial biodiversity and land degradation and; (ii)the implementation of pilot adaptation investments.

Organization of American States’ Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) REEfFix programme Workshop Global Environment Objective The project seeks to produce knowledge of global value on how to implement adaptation measures in small island states that can be applied in other countries in the region, not participating in the project and even for islands in other regions of the world – The value of these early lessons will make the GEF resources applied, more cost-effective in the medium term – The project complements the goals of the Mainstreaming Adaptation to Climate Change in the Caribbean (MACC) Project and applies the lessons and information gathered through the Caribbean Planning for Adaptation to Climate Change (CPACC) project by piloting the implementation of adaptation measures in countries that have already taken mainstreaming decisions and seek to execute specific measures to address the impacts o f climate change on biodiversity and land degradation.

Organization of American States’ Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) REEfFix programme Workshop Project Description Component one: Identification, Evaluation, Selection and Design of priority adaptation measures addressing impacts of climate change on biodiversity and land degradation Component two: Implementation of selected adaptation measures designed to address climate impacts on biodiversity and land degradation. The project will support the coordination and implementation, of pilot adaptation measures in seven sites in the participating countries thereby enhancing the resilience of insular ecosystems with biodiversity assets under threat from climate change. Component Three: Strengthen national capacity to implement multiple Multi-lateral environmental agreements (MEA). This component would finance goods and services required to develop and establish the building blocks for addressing multiple convention objectives as adopted by the three governments and promoted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and United Nations Convention to combat desertification and drought (UNCCD). Component Four: Project Management

Organization of American States’ Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) REEfFix programme Workshop Activities recommended under the SPACC Project for Union Island Engage in physical/civil works on the causeway and other hard engineering structures to restore natural circulation and tidal flow of water at AM&L; Implementation of community environmental education, outreach and awareness campaign; Implementing a reforestation program through reforestation, afforestation and patrolling activities to secure critical and fragile ecosystems; Conduct training workshops in leadership development, community resources management and sustainable livelihood as a means of enhancing the institutional capacity of the UIMES and the communities to address environmental challenges; Assist with the design and installation of 12 educational and informative signs on various themes for the two sites including the construction of interpretation centre; Financially support the coastal clean up campaigns
