15 The Globe Theatre Put the passages in the right order D It cost one old penny to go in, another penny for a seat, and a third penny for a cushion to sit on. The audience could buy food and drink (beer, water, and fruit) but there were no intervals, and no toilets in the theatre! B ( London Bridge was the only bridge over the Thames at that time.) Plays started at two o'clock in the afternoon, and a flag flew on top of the theatre when the play was ready to start. The theatre was very popular with both poor people and rich people – A but it was not very popular with the authorities because the audience was very noisy, and some people went to the theatre instead of working. There was often plague in London, too, and so the authorities closed the theatre if there were more than thirty deaths in one week. C Shakespeare built the Globe Theatre in London in 1599 on the south side of the River Thames. Most people lived on the north side of the river and crossed London Bridge to go to the theatre.
