Johannes Gutleber CERN Directorate of Accelerators & Technology September 22, 2015 H2020 EUCard3 Reliability & Availability Task RAMS Training Topic

Strategic Priorities of CERN The full exploitation of the LHC, as well as future high-energy/intensity colliders are necessary to advance our knowledge of fundamental physics Designated DG, F. Gianotti, July 29, Vienna (HEP2015) Coordinated program for the short-term, mid-term and long-term of converging activities J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20152

Directorate of Accelerators & Technology Hosts the “Future Circular Collider” study Coordinates centrally Definition of a geographically distributed and topically complementary program Establishment of collaboration agreements Definition of EU projects EuroCirCol design study (started June ‘15) EUCard3 (infrastructures) Marie Curie Action ETN (under preparation) several others… J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20153

Reliability & Availability of Accelerators Model the CERN accelerator complex Machines and infrastructures Gain deep understanding of key impact factors Engineering approach to sensitivity analysis incorporating cost and added value Develop a CERN-wide training curriculum in cooperation with the world-wide accelerator community J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20154

Current Setup CERN 2 persons on coordination and modeling 1 person for IT database setup 1-2 additional persons in 2016 for “high-performance simulation in-the-Cloud” Tampere University and Ramentor 4 persons + 1 PhD. At CERN Cooperation with company to make modeling and simulation software for for large-scale project University of Delft 1 person of cryogenics reliability analysis J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20155

H2020 EUCard3 Proposal Enhanced European Coordination for Accelerator Research & Development Successor to EUCard2 FP7 project See eucard2.web.cern.ch Task on “Reliability & Availability in Work Package “Accelerator Applications” WP coordinated by F. Zimmermann Future Circular Collider Study Deputy Proposal to be submitted in early 2016 J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20156

Objectives of Topic Establish a domain specific body of knowledge for Reliability, Availability and Maintainability methods and tools to improve the efficiency of particle accelerator operation J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20157 1. Establish a set of common standards, methods and practices to analyse, specify and assess RAMS characteristics of particle accelerator systems and components 2. Train domain experts and Early Stage Researchers the essential practices to work towards a common baseline for reliability engineering in the accelerator community 3. Assess the feasibility for an open accelerator reliability information system data platform to improve the sustainability of research and industrial accelerator infrastructures

Beneficiaries J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20158 CERNHeidelberg Ion TherapyUniversität Stuttgart Task coordination Environment and use- cases Open Reliability Information System Training and Book of Knowledge Establish a RAMS training package around -Terminology with examples -Best-practice methods with use-case examples -Guidelines suitable for application in particle-accelerator field -Courses “Body of Knowledge” -Compilation of knowledge in modular and “easy to grasp” domain engineer -Usable as support for “daily work” -Part of standard CERN training curriculum (courses, e-training, certification) -Integration of modelling, simulation and assessment software tools

CERN Plan Enlarge collaboration via MoU With CERN QM group towards “official” training curriculum and e-training course on basic terminology EUCard3 to support of funding for additional trainings and meetings Federate medical accelerator community and other research labs to join the initiative and increase reach Test training in Spring 2016 Gathers use cases for training from real-world experience Make training curriculum part of other projects E.g. Marie Curie Action under preparation on superconductivity and cryogenics J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 20159

Schedule J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 201510

Deliverables J. Gutleber CERN, September 21, 201511 ItemDateDescription M1T+6 monthsAccelerator specific training course performed at CERN Terminology, methods, practical examples D1T+18 monthsOpenly accessible, modular training material Standards, method descriptions, examples from accelerator domain, software tool descriptions, inclusion of EN relevant for medical accelerators M3T+30 monthsSecond course performed (may be at CERN or elsewhere)
