1 Family Weekend 2014 Assessment Presented by: Jared Cates

2 General Information  Date of Family Weekend: September 12 – 14, 2014  Attendance: Approximately 2,600 people  Planning Committee: ROTC, Library, Campus Recreation, Office of Student Engagement, Student Activities Council, Event & Meeting Services, Housing & Dining Services, Career Center, Alumni Association, Bookstore, and the Athletics Department.  Planned in conjunction with the first home football game

3 Program Overview & Mission Overview: Family Weekend 2014 is a program designed by the Missouri State University Family Association to help families reconnect with their student(s), engage with other families, and show their Missouri State pride. Mission: The ultimate mission of the weekend is to provide parents and family member’s the opportunity to become better educated on what their student(s) are involved with on campus and engage with the campus community.

4 Assessment Project Collaboration  Office of Parent & Family Programs  Professional staff member: Priscilla Childress/Parent & Family Coordinator  Timeframe: September 19 – November 7, 2014  Survey: Campus Labs  Administered: October 27 – November 7, 2014  Reminders: November 3 & 6, 2014  Respondents: 141/523 total respondents

5 Purpose  Provide a forum for a student affairs graduate student to collaborate with a full-time staff professional  Create measurable program & learning outcomes that align with the MSU Student Affairs learning domains  Define demographics of attendees  Assess the mission statement  Learning Outcomes  Determine effective methods of communication  Evaluate levels of satisfaction

9 Assess the Mission Statement Mission: The ultimate mission of the weekend is to provide parents and family member’s the opportunity to become better educated on what their student(s) are involved with on campus and engage with the campus community. Lesson learned: Insert a statement about family engagement (not involvement) and educational resources.

10 Learning Outcomes Learning Domain(s)Program Alignment Provide at least three examples of resources available to their student(s) on campus Educated Persons: Integrate co-curricular experience to educational experience and vice versa Communication: Influence others through persuasive communication -Student Showcase, -The Library – Past, Present and Future Family Event -Welcome Breakfast --“Absent Professor Program: 7 Effective Habits of a Successful College Student” Identify and describe at least three ways to get involved on campus N/A Lesson learned: The event provided families with a great deal of educational resources; however, there was minimal marketing of how families can engage with the university.

11 Educational Resources 27/141 respondents provided open-ended responses of the resources available. Participants were encouraged to offer more than one resource/response. (**Not a requirement for completion of the survey)

13 Lesson learned: Refine the dissemination of communication channels utilized by the Parent and Family Programs Office for future Family Weekend events

15 Limitations & Challenges  Time: (constructing the survey and distributing the survey in a timely fashion.  Collaboration  Verbiage of questions placed on the survey (created confusion for the participants)  Communication with CampusLabs
