Research Ethics

Learning Objectives By the end of module, students will have: Discussed and evaluated how ethics matter in educational research. Analyzed two research studies widely considered unethical. Complete the Human Subjects certification

Human Subject Course Review the Human Subject course prior to completing the certification test http://www.indiana.edu/~rcr/files/hspt.pdf Complete the Human Subject certification case https://www.indiana.edu/~rcr/index.php Human Subjects Test: https://www.indiana.edu/~rcr/ All Indiana University researchers are required to read and understand the appropriate tutorial ("Protection of Human Subjects in Research" or "Protection of Human Subjects in Non-Biomedical Research") and pass the test. This requirement is intended for everyone having direct contact with research subjects at IUPUI and IUB campuses or their affiliates. To receive credit for this assignment, copy and paste the email you received from the Human Subjects office into the assignment box in Oncourse. https://www.indiana.edu/~rcr/test

The Role of Ethics in Research As you review the following ethical cases, consider the following questions: Why do we need to talk about research ethics? What is the relationship between ethics and the research process? With whom or about what must researchers be ethical?

The Stanford Prison Experiment Stanford Prison Experiment What about this experiment was unethical? Did the benefits of the study out-weight the ethical costs?

Tuskegee Experiment What was the Tuskegee Syphilis Study? What was unethical about the study? Video

Summarizing Ethics Ethics matter at each stage of the research process. Ethical research practice applies to the participants of a study, the social group being studied, and the body of knowledge to which the findings are contributed. Human subjects approval is designed to protect human rights from unethical studies like those at Tuskegee and Stanford.
