2 Slavery Affects Whig Party Slavery divides Whigs in two o Northern Wigs "Conscience Wigs"  favored abolition of slavery  halted institution's spread into new territories o Southern Wigs "Cotton Wigs"  opposite viewpoints Defeat of Scott in 1852 o whigs lost faith in their party after this embarrassing defeat  Southern Whigs joined the Democrats  Northern Whigs joined the Free-soil party and later the Republican Part

3 Nativism and American Politics Nativism o favoritism of inhabitants of an area over newcomers Nativist movements o Know Nothing and American Party o thought immigrants were trying to overthrow the government

4 The Free Soil Party Short lived political party Created primarily for opposition of the expansion of slavery Mostly made up of former Whig Party and Democratic Party members A formidable third party but in the end was just a third party largely absorbed by the Republican Party in 1854

6 The Election of 1856: Issues Kansas–Nebraska Act: Fremont crusaded against the expansion of slavery. The Democrats endorsed the moderate “popular sovereignty”. The Democrats supported slavery expansion utilized in the Kansas– Nebraska Act. The third party, the relatively new American Party or “Know Nothing Party” ignored the slavery issue. The Slavery Issue disintegrated The Wig Party. The Slavery Issue strengthened The Republican Party.

7 The Election of 1856: Electoral Results Nominee: Buchanan Frémont Fillmore Electoral vote: 174 114 8 States carried: 19 11 1 Popular vote: 1,836,072 1,342,345 873,053 Percentage: 45.3% 33.1% 21.6% - Buchanan Won The Election. - The Slavery Issues favored Buchanan.

Dayton - Crusaded the expansion of slavery Expansion of slavery weakened his popularity

10 The Election of 1856: Canidates Millard Fillmore: - Born: January 7, 1800 - Died: March 8, 1874 - 13th President of the United States - 12th Vice President of the United States - 14th Comptroller of New York - Last Place in The Election of 1856 - Party: Know nothing - Running Mate: Andrew J. Donelson - Stayed mutural in the slavery issues - Slavery Issues hurt him in the long run.
