2. 2 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “Be diligent to come to me quickly” (v.9) –There was some urgent need for Timothy to go to Paul Paul does not tell the specific reason why it was so important –Earlier in the letter Paul gave Timothy specific matters to deal with Afterwards, he wanted him to come quickly requiring him to leave the work in Ephesus –Paul may have wanted to see him before he was executed –Regardless, he wanted him to come before winter (v.21) Page 46

3. 3 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “…Demas has forsaken me…(v.10) –“…having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica” (v.10) –Paul mentioned Demas favorably for sending greetings to the church at Colosse (Col.4:14) –He is mentioned in the Philemon letter as being one of Paul’s fellow-laborers (Philemon 1:24) Page 49

4. 4 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “…Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia.” (v.10) –We do not know any thing else about Crescens –Titus we know because Paul had written him a letter He was an uncircumcised Greek (Gal.2:3) He worked with Paul on his journeys –These two men “departed” rather than “forsaken” Paul Page 49

6. 6 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “Only Luke is with me.” (v.12) –Luke may have been with Paul in his imprisonment –He was a doctor and may have helped Paul with his medical problems from time to time “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.” (v.12) –Mark had started out with Paul on his first journey but left for some reason –Later he worked with Barnabas –Paul now thinks Mark would be useful for the ministry –We are not sure where Mark was at this time Page 49

7. 7 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus…” (v.12) –Paul had sent him to Ephesus for some good reason –He was one of the brethren who conducted the business of the collection for the poor Christians in Judea (Acts 20:4) Page 49

8. 8 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come – and the books, especially the parchments…” (v.13) –We don’t know why Paul left these articles but wanted them now –Carpus was a trusted friend in Troas –The cloak would be useful during the winter months –We do not know what books Paul had –He especially wanted the parchments The parchments may have been important documents, maybe Paul’s writings and/or letters from churches, etc. Page 49

9. 9 “Come…” 2 Timothy 4:9-15 “Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works.” (v.14) –“You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words.” (v.15) –Alexander had deliberately and maliciously sought to hurt Paul and his work Page 50

10. 10 “The Lord Stood With Me…” 2 Timothy 4:17-18 “At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them…” (vs.16,17) –No one would undertake his defense, but there was no bitterness in his heart –The people, like those who had deserted him during his first hearing before Caesar, had intended him no harm Their actions had come from weakness, not malice –“May it not be charged against them” is similar to Jesus’ request in Luke 23:34 and Steven’s request in Acts 7:60 Page 50

11. 11 “The Lord Stood With Me…” 2 Timothy 4:17-18 “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. (v.17) –Though all “men” forsook him, “God” did not! –Through all of his adversities, troubles and trials, he looked to the Lord for strength –This allowed him to preach (and maybe time to write this letter) and his example could provide encouragement to others Page 50

12. 12 “The Lord Stood With Me…” 2 Timothy 4:17-18 “Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.” (v.17b) –He had apparently been delivered from immediate death [a temporary delay] –Either he had avoided the possible sentence of being cast before wild animals, as was often the punishment given Christians by the Roman courts, or –His reference was figurative, with the fierce Nero being portrayed as a lion who had the power to destroy defendants if he chose to do so Page 51

13. 13 “The Lord Stood With Me…” 2 Timothy 4:17-18 “And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom.” (v.18) –An immeasurable blessing awaited Paul at the end of his earthly difficulties –He was confident that freedom from his problems lay just ahead –He would be bothered no more by the “evil work” of evil men Instead, he would wear his crown of righteousness and reign in eternal perfection in the heavenly kingdom Page 51

14. 14 Closing 2 Timothy 4:19-22 “Greet Prisca [Priscilla] and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.” (v.19) –Priscilla and Aquila had been longtime friends and fellow workers with Paul They were Jews with whom Paul had lived and worked when he first came to Corinth (Acts 18:2,3) –Onesiphorus likely also lived in Ephesus. He had shown kindness to Paul in Rome in spite of his chains He had known the apostle previously in Ephesus and had served him in that city as well Page 51

15. 15 Closing 2 Timothy 4:19-22 “Erastus stayed in Corinth, but Trophimus I have left in Miletus sick.” (v.20) –Erastus apparently was a native of Ephesus who had worked with Paul there and had been used in special work at times. (Acts 19:22) Erastus was treasurer of Corinth (Rom.16:23) Timothy and Erastus was sent in Asia Timothy and Erastus was sent in Asia –Trophimus was the Gentile Christian from Ephesus who was falsely accused by the Jews in Jerusalem of having been brought into the temple by Paul. (Acts 21:29) Page 52

16. 16 Closing 2 Timothy 4:19-22 “Do your utmost to come before winter.” (v.21) –He probably did not want Timothy to travel in the winter time, or he needed his cloak that he had left behind Page 51

17. 17 Closing 2 Timothy 4:19-22 “Eubulus greets you, as well as Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brethren.” (v.20) –These brethren sent their greetings to the young evangelist Claudia was a Christian woman –They were members of the church at Rome They knew Timothy from his earlier stay at Rome Page 51

18. 18 Closing 2 Timothy 4:19-22 “The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.” (v.22) –Finally, Paul’s last “famous last words” to his dear son in the faith were the best and most encouraging of all –Knowing from whom that prayer came, and having confidence that Paul’s prayer had received a favorable hearing with the Lord, Timothy’s heart would be comforted in the grace of God for a very long time.
