Nationalism Once you are divided into groups of four or five, fold and label the paper provided as you see below: One person at a time, lift the outside fold and respond to the following question: What are some things you think you’ll learn about as you study Nationalism? When finished, cover your response(s) and pass it on to the next person Scan the Table of Contents (iii-vii) and see if you can locate topics and features related to your predictions Nationalism

5. What is an Issue? To what extent should we embrace nationalism? Why is the key issue of the course, considered an issue question? Well…maybe because…. People may respond to this question in different ways No single, correct answer can be given Responding to the question requires people to gather information and think carefully An answer, decision, or action is required Read the top half of page four

6. Responding To Issue Questions…? When Responding to an Issue, Students Need to Become Critical Thinkers!! This Means: –Consider ALL Relevant Evidence –Make Reasoned Judgments –Base Judgment on Clear Criteria –Work on Developing the Character Traits, or Habits of Mind, that Promote Effective Decision Making Read pages six and seven and as a class we’ll put into our own words: Critical Thinking & Powerful Questions

7. Habits of Mind Read page Eight in it’s entirety. From the examples on page Eight, choose three Habits of Mind that you believe you already possess and write their names on a new page titled Habits of Mind. Now, choose three additional Habits of Mind that you believe you need to develop further. –Write these out also, including explanations as to why you need to improve in these areas –These will be referred to later in order to monitor your progress in developing these Habits – Don’t Lose Them!
