NGMAST 2008 p4 Heterogeneous network systems Several wireless technologies are developed rapidly: Static: wireless LANs (802.11), Bluetooth, UWB Vehicle: 2/3 G cellular, broadcast TV/Radio new possibilities in providing wireless network access to nomadic hosts. Wireless technologies differ in their: Frequency bands Requirements on mobility Transmission speed and quality Signalling protocols QoS architectures

NGMAST 2008 p5 Problem issues in heterogeneous networks Which radio technologies should a nomadic host chosen for its connection? It depends on: Available resources Supported mobility degree Radio resource management Services should be delivered seamlessly and in the "best" manner, over these various access technologies. Providing QoS for such heterogeneous environment is a challenging task due to: The diversification of implemented QoS mechanisms The diversification of resource reservation mechanisms The changes in radio access topologies and availability of resources

NGMAST 2008 p8 Proactive approach: Ambient Network proposal 1/2 Ambient Network network architecture overview

NGMAST 2008 p9 Summary 1/2 DAIDALOS adopts a Reactive QoS negotiation approach. Concept: Phase 1: mobility manager decides which is the most appropriate PoA for handover and triggers the handover execution. Phase 2: host starts QoS negotiation process with the QoS broker to request more resources. Problems: QoS negotiation cannot be initiated before the mobile node switches to its new PoA. E.g. if QoS negotiation established with new PoA fails, while it would succeed with another candidate PoA, that unsuitable PoA has been dropped from candidate list during interface selection phase. Ambient Network adopts a Proactive QoS negotiation approach. Concept: establish dynamic negotiation of service level specifications agreements. Problems: Network resources are used intensively (QoS control message advertisements). operator has great difficulty controlling its network resources.

NGMAST 2008 p10 Summary 2/2 Proposed solution: Concept: Adopt proactive approach. Integrate QoS negotiation into handover decision phase. Distribute QoS decision parameters between several managers. Advantages: Reduce the QoS signalling overhead cost. Allow operator controlling its network resources. Increase the probability that user will be "the best connected". Have low cost deployment.

NGMAST 2008 p13 4 QoS Signalling Overhead Evaluation

NGMAST 2008 p14 Evaluation Scenario Overview 1/2 Goal: How QoS decision parameters can be distributed over the control entities in order to reduce the QoS signalling overhead introduced by QoS negotiation. Scenarios: Scenario 1: QoS decision parameters are stored at the core network level. Scenario 2: QoS decision parameters are stored at the radio access network level. Scenario 3: QoS decision parameters are stored at the user's terminal level.

NGMAST 2008 p15 Evaluation scenario Overview 2/2 Measured metric: Size of all messages necessary to achieve QoS negotiation during mobility scenario Varied metrics: W C : weight of a hop in the core network. W L : weight of a hop in the local radio access network. W W : weight of a hop in the wireless medium. S Neg : the size of QoS data to be negotiated.

NGMAST 2008 p16 Results 1/4 Size of QoS data to be negotiated

NGMAST 2008 p17 Results 2/4 W W is varied:

NGMAST 2008 p20 5 Conclusions

NGMAST 2008 p21 Conclusions Issues: Supporting QoS in heterogeneous wireless networks. Coupling QoS mechanisms with mobility management. Research works: Convergence between QoS management and handover decision phase. Proactive QoS negotiation scheme. Future works Analysis of negotiation mechanism in OPNET simulator.
