3 Motivation and Goals: Academic Design a flexible program capable of: evolving according to changes in faculty and their interests offering students three academic options: Architecture, Software Systems, and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) with a minimal common core allow students to deepen their knowledge within the option of their choice by leaving room for free technical electives Prepare students for: graduate school in CE, CS, SE leadership scientific and engineering positions in industry an earlier and more active involvement in research Allow students to take CE major courses earlier in their program Reduce the number of total credits

4 Motivation and Goals: Administrative Keep current student enrollment Keep additional resources to a minimum Avoid creating non essential new courses Allow a quick and smooth transition into the new program Must be able to start program with available resources Start offering new courses in August 2001

5 New ICOM at a Glance General Engineering core of 17 credits Computer Engineering core of 25 credits Three main options of 22 credits each: –Architecture –Software & Systems –Digital Signal Processing Total of 154 credits
