Ratio Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1

Learners be able to multiply and divide using ratios. Learners will also simplify ratios into their ‘simplest form’

Today we will: Simplify ratios Share quantities using ratios

Ratio is written as 2 quantities For example: screen wash in car: 1:10 = 1 part screen wash to 10 parts water

Cocktails: “Harvey Wallbanger” INGREDIENTS:  Ice cubes  2 parts vodka  5 parts freshly squeezed orange juice  1 part Galliano

We can use the ratio of something to multiply or divide a quantity as required E.g. 3 tins of blue paint : one tin of white If you need to mix 9 tins of blue paint you will need 3 of white

 There are 3 people with green eyes to every 1 person with blue eyes : Direct Proportion: If there are 4 people in a class with blue eyes, then there is likely to be 12 people with green eyes.

We can often make the numbers in ratios smaller so that they are easier to compare. You do this by dividing each side of the ratio by the same number. This is called simplifying. For example: Non Smokers: Smokers = 180:60 Simplified: 3:1

Solve problems using ratio where one number is a multiple of the other Check calculations using rounding or reversing Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1

You have decided to paint your hallway peach. You need 3:2 orange and white paint. If you need 500ml of paint in total to cover the wall, how many ml of orange and white paint will you need? Hmmmm….

First of all – let’s break the question down… 3 parts orange and 2 parts white. Altogether – 5 parts. Let’s work out how many ml 1 part is … 500 ÷ 5 = 100 Orange needs 3 parts, so 100x3 = 300ml White needs 2 parts, so 100x2=200ml You will need 300ml of orange, and 200 ml of white!

You decide to cement your patio. The cement mix requires 3 parts cement, 2 parts sand and 1 part water. 3 : 2 : 1 If you need 250kg of mix, how much cement, water and sand will you need?
