1 Texas in the 20 th Century

2 How was Texas Changing? Life in the early 1900s was becoming much more like the Texas we know today. People were moving to towns and cities and great discoveries were being made.

3 Texans on the Move New technology made farming easier. But, this also meant that fewer people were needed to work the farms. People moved to cities to find new opportunities. This is called urbanization. Cities like Houston were popular because of a booming new industry….oil!

4 Immigration The opportunities were so great in Texas that people came from all over the world. They came from Mexico, Germany, and even as far away as Asia. The main port of entry was Galveston.

5 New Inventions Many of the modern conveniences that we have today were brand new at the beginning of the 20 th century: –Telephones were becoming popular. –Electricity allowed for lighting in homes and streets.

6 What about Leisure Time? With so many inventions and the advancement of industry, people had more time to have fun! In the early 1900s….what do you suppose people did for recreation??
