3 Discipleship in the Gospel of John
John 20:30-31  30Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

4 Good thing Jesus is gone.
“5But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. ” (John 16:5-11)

5 Good thing Jesus is gone.
“12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:12-15)

6 Good thing Jesus is gone.
“7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7)

7 What does the Spirit of Truth do?
The Spirit convicts the world. “8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” (John 16:8-11)

8 What does the Spirit of Truth do?
The Spirit of Truth convicts the world concerning sin (v. 9). The Spirit exposes “bad people.” The Spirit of Truth convicts the world concerning righteousness (v. 10). The Spirit exposes “good people.” Isaiah 64:6 The Spirit of Truth convicts the world concerning judgment (v. 11). The Spirit exposes false judgment. 2 Corinthians 4:4-6

9 Implications: For those who don’t yet follow Christ
If you are a “bad person”…change your mind. If you are a “good person”…change your mind. If your judgments are false…change your mind. Repent! For those who follow Christ Stop judging the world! No more stoning! John 8:7

10 What does the Spirit of Truth do?
The Spirit guides us into truth. “12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”(John 16:12-13)

11 The Spirit vs. Satan Source of Death Condemnation
Spirit of Truth (John 16:13) Father of Lies (John 8:44) Source of Life Grace Grace-based motivation Specificity of conviction Freedom Lives in Us Source of Death Condemnation Guilt-driven motivation Vagueness of conviction Bondage Roams the World

12 Implications: How should we relate to the Scriptures?
We need the Spirit’s guidance. John 5:39-40; John 14:26 How should we relate to the Church? Every believer has the Spirit within. 2 Corinthians 3:3, 17-18; Jeremiah 31:33-34; Acts 2:16-21 (Joel 2:28-32) How should we relate to the World? The Spirit says the Gospel is for everyone. Ephesians 3:4-6

13 What does the Spirit of Truth do?
The Spirit brags on Jesus. “14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:14-15)

14 Good thing Jesus is gone.
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7) “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.’ And when he had said this he breathed on them & said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” (John 20:20-22) “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25)
