1 UMZINYATHI DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY PRESENTATION BY DISTRICT AIDS COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON, CLLR J.M. MTHETHWA 20 MARCH 2013

2 Introduction UMzinyathi District Municipality is one of the poorest districts in the Province, with its population growing on daily basis; Hills and rocks prohibits fast tracking of development in the area; Illiteracy has great contribution to underdevelopment; Yet, through OSS, is doing all its best to confront social and economic problems experienced by its citizens;

3 2011 Census indicates that uMzinyathi population is growing; UMzinyathi is pulling towards a positive direction in terms of human development; It constitute 5% of KZN population, followed by Sisonke and Amajuba; Only Nquthu has dropped a bit; Age between 20-24 form majority of the population, which is 10,7%; This is also the most vulnerable group in terms of unemployment, HIV/AIDS etc. Information by Stats SA

Illiteracy has decreased from 44.4% to 25.3%; UMsinga Municipality has high percentage of illiteracy, now sitting at 40.9% form 67.9% in 2001; 92% of children are going school if compared to 85.2% in 2001; No. of people with matric has increased by 21.2%; Unemployment has dropped from 60.5% in 2001 to 36.6% in 2011 Information by Stats SA

5 Cont. Households with piped water has increased from 9.9% to 17.5%; Electricity installations has increased from 25.5% in 2001 to 48.9% in 2011; Information by Stats SA

Although there are improvements in the lives of people at UMzinyathi, there is a lot that need to be done in years to come; Topography, rocks and scatteredness of households make it become very expensive to render basic services to the people, using very scarce resources; With the presence of Sukuma Sakhe programme, we will get there in a certain run. 7 Community Mobilization UMzinyathi District is in the process of establishing the PLWHIV Forum, following the workshop held on the 28 th February 2013, where the task team was elected to facilitate this process.

8 Community Mobilization Number of people aged 25-49 reached with prevention awareness campaigns including anti-gender based violence information First quarter total reached - 1 709 people Second quarter total reached - 1 888 Third quarter total reached - 3 003 Total : 6 600 Increase due to the massive OSS awareness campaigns conducted

9 PEOPLE AGING BETWEEN 25 – 49 REACHED PREVENTION AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS INCLUDING ANTI-GENDER BASED VIOLENCE First quarter total people reached : 2431 Second quarter total reached :2443 Third quarter: 2400 Total : 7274 Increase due to the massive OSS awareness campaigns conducted

10 ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN No. of Registered OVC’s:  First Quarter: 2 639 Second Quarter: 426 Third Quarter: 804 Total : 3 869

13 LIFE SKILLS First Quarter : 179 learners reported pregnant Second quarter : 243 learners reported pregnant Third quarter: 127 learners reported pregnant Kemoja, Leletti School Ground, Love Life, School Health Services and My Life My Future Project assisted in learners’ behaviour change.

14 (PMTCT) Baby PCR tested positive around 6 weeks rate First Quarter: 2.4% Second Quarter: 1.3% Third Quarter: 1.3% Average – 1.6% Pregnant mothers are adhering to their treatment And improved health education to HIV positive mothers. Support provided by traditional leaders and CCGs

15 Baby HIV antibody test positive at 18months rate First Quarter: 31.7% Second Quarter: 45.1% Third Quarter: 57.8% Average – 44.8% The increase could be due to mixed feeding. Health education is continuing to try and stop this practise

16 ANC Booking before 20-weeks Rate First Quarter: 45.8% Second Quarter: 51.9% Third quarter: 51% Average – 49.5% There is a steady improvement due to the improved health education and the assistance of the CCGs inWar Rooms

17 Children under 12 Sexually Assaulted First Quarter: 40.7% Second Quarter: 35.2% Third Quarter: 27.7% Average – 34.5% Community mobilisation on sexual abuse is continuing

18 MALE CIRCUMCISION First Quarter: 1 330 Second Quarter: 1 624 Third Quarter: 1 548 TOTAL - 4502 The no. increased in the 2 nd quarter due to awareness campaigns intensity and support from traditional leadership. MMC coordinators are assisting in this regard.

19 HCT and TB Screening Number of New HIV tests carried out Quarter 1 – 27 598 Quarter 2 – 27 414 Quarter 3 – 32 835 TOTAL – 87 847 Great achievement in the 3 rd quarter due to massive campaigns by OSS

20 CONDOM DISTRIBUTION - Males First quarter : 837,404 Second quarter : 1,434,041 Third quarter : 2,108,858 TOTAL – 4,380,303 Great achievement in the third quarter due to increased male condoms distribution sites. The use of Condom Distributors has assisted in improving the condom distribution in the district

21 CONDOM DISTRIBUTION - Females First quarter : 11 520 Second quarter : 13 857 Third quarter : 43 410 TOTAL – 68,787 More females are getting more awareness in using female condoms. The training on Female condoms has greatly contributed to the increase in utilisation

22 Sexual Violence Number of new Sexual Assault cases Quarter 1 – 91 Quarter 2 – 93 Quarter 3 – 93 TOTAL - 187
