3 3 Why Do You Need To Know This?  Rates are important because they are used to compare quantities with different units.  Rates can be used in a variety of ways and can be found many places in the real world.

4 4 Vocabulary  Rate—Ratio that compares quantities with different kinds of units.  Unit Rate—Rate with a denominator of 1.

6 6 Notes  To find unit rate, you divide by the denominator.

8 8 How Much Does It Cost?  Find the unit price per orange if it costs $2 for 6 oranges.  Find the unit price per can if it costs $3 for 6 cans of soda.
