5 Vietnam War Americans were involved because “Fearing a communist takeover of the entire region, the United States grew more and more wary of the progress of Ho Chi Minh and the Vietcong. Communism had become the evil menace in the United States and with expansion of Soviet rule into Eastern Europe, Korea and Cuba, the Americans were bent on stopping communism from spreading any further.” http://www.vietnampix.com/intro2.htm

12 Message Music “What distinguished music from the mid-1960s forward was the production of songs -- rock, folk, and blues -- with a social or political message. The music was an attempt to reflect upon the events of the time --- civil rights, the growing unrest over the war in Vietnam, and the rise of feminism. In many instances, the "message" within the song was simplistic or even banal. However, other songs received substantial airplay and became "anthems" at concerts, rallies, and demonstrations.” http://faculty.smu.edu/dsimon/change-music%2060s.html

13 Youth Culture “Demonstrations, organizations, speeches, freedom chants, and drugs helped ease the pain of knowing that our American brothers and sisters were losing their lives in the fight at Vietnam. Drugs became, perhaps, one of the most influential variables apparent in the music of the 60s.” http://library.thinkquest.org/21342/1960.htm

14 Youth Culture People felt a freedom in the 60s that hadn’t been felt before, whether that was a real freedom or only drug induced is hard to know.
