Canada’s Main Contributions The Battle of the Atlantic Hong Kong The Italian Campaign D-Day on Juno Beach Dieppe

Raid on Dieppe August 19, 1942 Canadians made up the majority of the attackers in the raid. Nearly 5,000 of the 6,100 troops were Canadians. The remaining troops consisted of approximately 1,000 British Commandos and 50 American Rangers.

Casualties 907 Canadians killed 2,460 wounded and 1,874 taken prisoner by the Germans. Canadians were taken prisoner by the Germans at Dieppe. Canadian and Allied soldiers are paraded as prisoners of war by their captors

Of the 2,210 who returned to Britain, only 236 were unhurt - and 200 of these were men who had not been landed. An assault craft lying abandoned on the beach following the Dieppe Raid. The photo was taken by German personnel.

Why did it fail? The Allies attacked a well- defended beach from the water during the day. The Germans saw them coming and were ready for them. The concrete barriers, wire fencing, and other obstacles on the beach show how well the Germans fortified the Dieppe beach. Several hundreds of miles of beaches were fortified in the same fashion.

The Allies couldn’t get their tanks, etc. past the beach: they got stuck in the pebbles The steep cliffs along the shore had caves where German soldiers were strategically placed. The Cliffs at Puys Beach Canadian tanks got bogged down on the pebbled beaches at Dieppe and very few ever made their objective of getting up the cliffs and into the town.

One of the few tanks that actually made it up off the beach and into the Dieppe area and was later destroyed. Canadians captured at Dieppe – pictures probably taken by German personnel, 19 Aug 1942. Bodies of Canadian soldiers lying among damaged landing craft and 'Churchill' tanks of the Calgary Regiment

We Remember The Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery is located approximately five km south of Dieppe, in the town of Hautôt-sur-Mer. The hillside cemetery is unique in that its headstones have been placed back to back in long double rows. The Germans buried these war dead, the same way they buried their own. 10 After they liberated the region, the Allies chose not to disturb the graves. Today, the cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Commemorative plaque at Square du Canada The Dieppe-Canada Monument
