1 The Earmuffs Invented by Chester Greenwood Written and Illustrated by: Emily Caroline Davis

2 Earmuffs were invented by a fifteen-year-old boy named Chester Greenwood in 1873 in Farmington, Maine. While testing a new pair of ice skates on a pond near his home, he got frustrated trying to keep his ears warm in the bitter cold. He tried wrapping his head in a wool scarf, but it was too bulky and itchy, and he was allergic to wool. So he made two ear shaped loops from wire and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. He called his invention the Greenwood Champion Ear Protector. It was an easy way to keep your ears warm in the winter. Earmuffs 1873

3 Chester Greenwood Chester Greenwood was a very smart person his entire life. He invented earmuffs when he was only fifteen-years-old! He had a rough childhood though. He was one of six children in a poor family, and walked an eight-mile route from house to house almost everyday, selling sweets such as fudge and peppermints that he made himself. Chester was born in Farmington, Maine on December 4, He was a grammar school dropout, and had no job before inventing earmuffs. He made money off of selling his inventions and owning his own company. He invented many other things besides earmuffs, and was granted more than 130 patents. Every year a parade takes place on the first Saturday in December to celebrate Chester’s birthday with local police cars in the parade decorated as giant earmuffs!
