1 Marine Ecosystems

2 Warm-Up Write your homework – leave it out to be stamped
Update your Table of Contents for today! REVIEW: What is an ecosystem? What are biotic & abiotic factors? What are water ecosystems called? Land ecosystems? How can they be connected? Our focus today is marine ecosystems…what does marine refer to? Date Session # Activity Page 5/19 & 5/20 6 Marine Ecosystems & Organisms Note Guide 8 Marine Vocabulary Swim Blendspace 9

3 Intertidal zone Neritic zone Oceanic zone

4 Marine Ecosystems: Within these zones are many different ecosystems, but some are transitional areas between 2 different ecosystems making them more specialized.

5 Estuary An area where fresh water from a river mixes into the salt water of the ocean creating “brackish” waters Nursery for many aquatic & terrestrial organisms

6 Estuary Demo Salt Water is denser than freshwater therefore it does not fully mix…watch what happens in our mini estuary

7 Salt Marsh A common habitat within estuaries
Acts as a filter for pollution Protects the shoreline from erosion

8 Mangrove Forest Stabilize the coastline from erosion
Intricate root system provides protection for organisms

9 Essential Marine Organisms
Within these ecosystems there are different categories of organisms, all of which play a role to keep the ecosystem functioning…

10 Algae Most important photosynthesizing organisms on Earth
Algae are the foundation of aquatic food webs and have many economic benefits

11 Plankton A diverse group of organisms that float with the ocean current because they are too weak to swim

12 Nekton Nekton = “free-swimmers,” organisms that are strong enough to swim freely and independently of the ocean currents.

13 Benthos Benthos = “bottom feeders”
Called benthos because they live in the benthic zone/ocean floor

14 Marine Vocabulary Swim
Use the Blendspace to go through the rest of the essential Ocean Zones, Ecosystems, Resources and Processes within the ocean. 1A class code = iuyx 3A class code = tyjw 4A class code = obbq 1B class code = mzry 3B class code = uwvk 4B class code = pibl
