Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012 9.05–9.30: Introduction to the project and the outside visit 9.30-11: Visit the pond to meet Mrs Mary Porter of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust who will help us to think about the natural environment 11-11.30: Break 11.30-12: Full year briefing on all four projects 12-1.30: Continue above and discuss the experience of the visit, record the information gathered noting all existing and potential species and continue research through the internet and other materials about these species and their habitat needs 1.30-2.15 Lunch 2.15-3.15: Review and record first day activities and think about the next steps for day 2

4. The Village Pond On Lady Meers Road – a medieval fish pond rescued from building work Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  Rescued because of its historical significance and the presence of the great crested newt which is a protected species  Pond dredged and restored, fenced & landscaped  Heritage Lottery grant to develop this further and encourage further wildlife  We need your help! Through this project we will explore how this can happen by creating suitable ‘habitat’ to encourage wildlife

5. Project Aim: To research and provide suitable habitats to encourage wildlife in the pond and surrounding area Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  To research the species of wildlife already in the area and other species which could be attracted to it.  To research through the internet and by consulting e.g. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (LWT) the most appropriate habitats (e.g. bird and bat boxes) which will encourage this wildlife to remain in/move to this area.  To design and cost the building of these habitats and submit them to the Parish Council.  To build and install these habitats.  To monitor the results of providing these habitats.

Outside visit: You are going out to the pond where you will meet Mrs Mary Porter of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  You will walk to the pond where Mary will talk to you about both animals and plants to be found in areas such as the pond and its surroundings  She will do some pond dipping and ask you to see what is present at this time of year  You may also take your own photos of them and note any questions you may have for later research  At all times you must stay together and with the adults – do not wander off on your own

Review & Recording You are now going to review your visit to the pond and record what you have learned through it Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  Before she has to leave us, Mrs Porter will give you some pointers on what to look for and where and answer any questions you may have  You will now divide into four groups and write down some key facts that you learned through the visit and how you feel about the importance of the pond

Further research: You are now going to look in more detail at some of what you saw earlier at the pond Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  You will now be divided into four groups and each one be allocated a species to research e.g. 1.Great crested newt 2.Garden birds, 3.Hedgehogs, 4.Bats 5.Insects

Further research Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  Use the internet and other materials to research (see file for more information):-  what your species prefers as a place to live  and what food they eat  From this and any other information you can find on the internet, decide whether it is practical to encourage this species in the immediate area of the pond.  If not, are there any other places in the village where it would be possible?  Record information that you have discovered for use in the next stages of the project.  Prepare a 2 minute talk - about what you have learned - that your group can give to the other groups

12. Review: What have we learned today and what will we be doing next time Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  Spend a few minutes in your group noting down the important things you have learned today  Share these with the other groups  Remember that the aim of the project over three days is to create some new habitats for plans and animals  Next time you will look in more detail at this data, select what you think is important and agree how you will use this to design and plan habitats for wildlife and plants  What have you recorded today that will help you in this task?
