Why BODMAS and BIDMAS are yesterday’s news.... © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015 Professor Assessor here to help explain...

Why not BODMAS/BIDMAS? Are you used to using one of these to order steps in calculations? BracketsBrackets OrderIndices DivideDivide MultiplyMultiply AddAdd SubtractSubtract Yes, so what’s the problem? © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015 Well there are 3 problems in fact...

Why not BODMAS/BIDMAS? Are you used to using one of these to order steps in calculations? BracketsBrackets OrderIndices DivideDivide MultiplyMultiply AddAdd SubtractSubtract Brackets are not the only way of Grouping numbers together in a calculation © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

Why not BODMAS/BIDMAS? Are you used to using one of these to order steps in calculations? BracketsBrackets OrderIndices DivideDivide MultiplyMultiply AddAdd SubtractSubtract Divide is not more important than Multiply – they have the SAME importance! © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

Why not BODMAS/BIDMAS? Are you used to using one of these to order steps in calculations? BracketsBrackets OrderIndices DivideDivide MultiplyMultiply AddAdd SubtractSubtract Add is not more important than Subtract – they also have the SAME importance! © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

Why not BODMAS/BIDMAS? Are you used to using one of these to order steps in calculations? BracketsBrackets OrderIndices DivideDivide MultiplyMultiply AddAdd SubtractSubtract © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015 Oh dear! Not very useful then!

Divide is not more important than Multiply – they have the SAME importance! Add is not more important than Subtract – they also have the SAME importance! Try a new way... *If things are on the same line, you must do them in the order they come! Grouping Indices Multiply   Divide* Add   Subtract* Brackets are not the only way of Grouping numbers together in a calculation © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015 Try this instead....

B*DMAS B*DMAS Try a new way... GIMAGIMA © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

Common Groupings So, brackets are a way of grouping values in a calculation: 4  (3 + 2) 3 + 2 must be done first because the brackets are grouping that part of the calculation together Correct answer4  5 = 20 Here are some other common ones... © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

Common Groupings Use a fraction bar 2 + 18 is grouped by the bar and must be done first Correct answer 4 + 6 is grouped by the bar and must be done first Correct answer © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

Common Groupings Use a square root 1 + 4  2 is grouped by the root and must be done first Correct answer 16 + 9 is grouped by the root and must be done first Correct answer © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

And so... Remember: *If things are on the same line, you must do them in the order they come! Grouping Indices Multiply   Divide* Add   Subtract* © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015

End © www.icoachmaths.co.uk2015 Ciao for now! GIMAGIMA
