4  Direct Quote – Take the author’s words EXACTLY!  Integrate into a sentence!  It has been discussed by several scholars that Hawthorne’s work “was influenced by his own dark feelings from his love life” (Doty 24).  Paraphrase – Put research in your own words – giving credit  According to John Maler, Hawthorne wrote the novel in the fall of 1849, and the fact and idea of revolution were said to be on his mind, and this is apparent throughout the novel.  Notice the underlined phrase  Must give credit BEFORE or AFTER in a paraphrase USING RESEARCH

5  Combination of Direct Quote and Paraphrase  On March 16, “the first edition of 2,500 copies appeared at a retail price of 75 cents and bound in characteristic Ticknor and Fields binding of brown ribbed T cloth” (Fields 2). In a matter of approximately two months, Hawthorne’s work went from manuscript to finished product, to the hands of several eager readers (Fields 2).  Examples/Tips can also be found in your packet!
