2
W HY M ODIFY THE GBT P ROTOCOL ? Modifications focused on handling and accounting of non-target species 2014 QA/QC noted inconsistencies Language in 2014 GBT Protocol could use clarification 2015 GBT Protocol provides clarification Standardizes handling and reporting Standardizes accounting for ESA purposes 2
3
T ARGET S PECIES Target Species = Examine Yearling Chinook and steelhead when dominate samples in spring Subyearling Chinook when dominate samples in early to mid-June Non-Target Species = Do Not Examine Sockeye Coho PIT-tagged CH1, ST, and CH0 3
4
S AMPLE S IZE Target sample size 100 juvenile Chinook and/or steelhead Based on analyses by USGS-Biological Resources Division 100 needed to obtain level of precision necessary to make inferences about GBT levels on entire population If you don’t think you can collect 75 fish (based on previous SMP sample), DO NOT even try to do GBT 4
5
M ETHOD OF C OLLECTING AND H ANDLING – BON AND RIS GBT Sample is taken from sample tank FPC will work with staff from BON and RIS in 2015 to minimize amount of time fish are held in sample tank before examination 5
6
M ETHOD OF C OLLECTING AND HANDLING – LGR, LGS, LMN, & MCN GBT sampling takes place at separator 1. Fish netted from separator one at a time If CO and SO can be identified while still in net, may return to separator immediately. Record number, species, and clip type for later reporting Otherwise, place in dark bucket of fresh water No more than 10 fish per examiner should be netted at one time All target fish should be examined within 15 min. 6
7
M ETHOD OF C OLLECTING AND H ANDLING – LGR, LGS, LM, & MCN 2. All fish from bucket will be sorted and identified to species a)All SO and CO are recorded and returned to separator ASAP, with light anesthetic if necessary. Record by species and clip type Record as Not Examined 7
8
M ETHOD OF C OLLECTING AND H ANDLING – LGR, LGS, LMN, & MCN 2. All fish from bucket will be sorted and identified to species b)All CH1, ST, and CH0 are scanned for PIT-tags If PIT-Tagged record date, time (00:00), species, age (if CH), clip, special species, and mark type (PT) and return to separator ASAP with light anesthetic if necessary Record as not-examined PIT-tagged fish should be entered into a recap file and uploaded to PTAGIS If Not PIT-tagged place in bucket with anesthetic for later examination 8
9
M ETHOD OF A NESTHETIZING FOR GBT E XAMINATION Use dark plastic buckets Label buckets for “Fresh” and “Anesthetic” water If holding for >5 min prior to examination, transfer to bucket with 30mg/l solution of MS- 222 Just prior to examination, transfer fish to 80mg/l solution of MS-222 During exam, use 30mg/l solution of MS-222 to wash over gills while in exam tray After examination, place fish in bucket with aerated fresh water 9
10
M ETHOD OF E XAMINATION AND R ANKING GBT Target species examined under dissecting microscope Only unparied fins examined for GBT Dorsal, caudal, and anal Both eyes examined for GBT Data recorded on each examined fish include: (1) exam date and time, (2) species/age, (3) special species, (4) fork length, (5) GBT Ranks, (6) clip and marking info, and (7) comments 10
11
GBT R ANKS GBT Data are recorded on percent area of fin or eye that is covered with bubbles Eye with highest level of bubbles will be recorded for ranking Minimum level of magnification is 10 Ranks: Rank 0 = No bubbles Rank 1 = 1-5% of fin or eye covered Rank 2 = 6-25% of fin or eye covered Rank 3 = 26-50% of fin or eye covered Rank 4 = >50% of fin or eye covered 11
12
GBT R ANKS To rank, divide fin or eye into quarters and imagine pushing all bubbles into one area and then estimate the proportion covered 12 ~15% of fin is occluded with bubbles Rank 2
13
GBT R ANKS 13 ~<5% of eye is occluded with bubbles Rank 1
14
H ANDLING OF F ISH A FTER E XAMINATION Examined fish placed in recovery bucket Upon recovery, examined fish are released to same location as other SMP fish are located Ultimately, examined fish have same fate as fish that are part of SMP sample Transported if transportation taking place Bypassed if no transportation taking place 14

R ECORDING F ISH F ROM GBT S AMPLING E FFORTS IN GBT. NET BON and RIS – Only examined fish are entered into GBT.net LGR, LGS, LMN, MCN – All fish encountered during GBT sampling are entered into GBT.net Non-Target species and PIT-tagged Chinook and steelhead are entered as Not Examined Examined target species entered as Examined 15
16
R ECORDING F ISH FROM GBT S AMPLING E FFORTS IN FPC32. NET BON and RIS – GBT fish do not need to be entered separately into FPC32.net LGR, LGS, LMN, MCN – Only examined fish are to be entered into FPC32.net Examined fish should be entered into Catch Detail as a separate sub-batch, 100% sample rate, and sample code of GB 16
