Laboratory Laboratory (29 CFR 1910.1450) (29 CFR 1910.1450) Standard Hygiene Hygiene

Lab Hygiene Standard Required Components Required Components è Written Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) è Employee Information & Training è Medical Consultation & Examinations è Employee Exposure Determination è Hazard Identification è Record keeping

Lab Hygiene Standard Employee Exposure Determination Employee Exposure Determination The employer shall measure the employee’s exposure to any substance regulated by a standard which requires monitoring if there is reason to believe that exposure levels for that substance routinely exceed the action level (or in the absence of an action level, the PEL).

Chemical Hygiene Plan Elements & Specific Measures Elements & Specific Measures è Standard Operating Procedures relevant to Safety & Health Considerations è Criteria used to determine and implement control measures to reduce employee exposure è Measures to ensure proper performance of fume hoods and other protective equipment è Provisions for employee information & training è Circumstances requiring prior approval of a particular laboratory operation, procedure, or activity

Chemical Hygiene Plan Elements & Measures (Cont.) Elements & Measures (Cont.) è Provisions for medical consultation and examinations è Designation of a person responsible for implementation of the chemical hygiene plan è Provisions for additional employee protection for work with particularly hazardous substances u Select carcinogens u Reproductive Toxins u Substances with a high degree of acute toxicity

Lab Hygiene Standard Required Information Required Information è Contents of this standard and its appendices è Locations and availability of the CHP è OHSA PEL’s or recommended exposure limits for other hazardous chemicals è Signs and symptoms associated with exposures to hazardous chemicals used in the laboratory è Locations and availability of known reference material on the hazards, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals found in the lab

Lab Hygiene Standard Required Training Required Training è Methods and observations to detect presence or release of a hazardous chemical è The physical and health hazards of chemicals in the work area è Measures employees can take to protect themselves from these hazards è Applicable details of the Department’s written CHP

Medical Consultation/Exams Required Whenever: Required Whenever: è Employee develops signs or symptoms associated with a hazardous chemical exposure è Exposure monitoring reveals an exposure level routinely above an OSHA AL or PEL (May require medical monitoring) è Spill, leak, explosion, or other occurrence resulting in the likelihood of hazardous exposure

Medical Consultation/Exams Information to Physician Information to Physician è Identity of hazardous chemical(s) to which employee may have been exposed è A description of the conditions under which the exposure occurred, including quantitative exposure data, if available è A description of the signs and symptoms of exposure that the employee is experiencing

Medical Consultation/Exams Physician’s Written Opinion Physician’s Written Opinion è Any recommendation for further medical follow-up è The results of the medical examination and associated tests è Any medical condition revealed during the exam which may place the employee at increased risk as a result of exposure to a hazardous workplace è Statement that employee has been informed of results of consultation or exam and any medical condition that may require further exam or treatment

Lab Hygiene Standard Hazard Identification Hazard Identification è Ensure that labels on incoming containers of hazardous chemicals are not removed or defaced è Maintain any MSDS’s that are received with incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals, and ensure ready accessibility to laboratory employees è Determine if chemicals developed in laboratory are hazardous. Provide appropriate training to employees, and MSDS’s if produced for another user outside the laboratory

Lab Hygiene Standard Record Keeping Requirements Record Keeping Requirements u Any measurements taken to monitor employee exposures u Any medical consultation and examinations including tests or written opinions required by this standard è Establish and maintain, for each employee, an accurate record of:
