M ULTI - DISCIPLINARY /I NSTITUTIONAL C OLLABORATION Purdue University, USA – Lead institution 1. University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, USA Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania 2. Virginia Tech, USA Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, Ghana 3. Moi University, Kenya 4. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, Ghana

PROJECT TEAM Dr. Kwamena Quagrainie, Purdue University, USA Dr. Rebecca Lochmann, UAPB, Ghana Dr. Emmanuel Frimpong, Virginia Tech, USA Dr. Charles Ngugi, Moi University, Kenya Dr. Steve Amisah, KNUST, Ghana Dr. Sebastian Chenyambuga, SUA, Tanzania

P ROJECT G OAL Enhancing human and structural capacity in: production technology value chain, and aquatic resource management to ensure long-term sustainability of aquaculture in Africa.

Specific Projects Purdue University/Moi University/KNUST 1. Developing Supply Chain and Group Marketing Systems for Fish Farmers in Ghana and Kenya Develop chain linkages & marketing strategies Use dynamic programming model accounting for time, risk, & technology to find optimal decision & coordination strategies for fish farmers

Specific Projects Purdue University/Moi University 1. Development of Small-Scale Clarias Fingerlings as Bait for Lake Victoria Commercial Fisheries in Western Kenya Develop sustainable Lake Victoria fisheries by developing a market for farmed baitfish Enhance longline fishing instead of gillnetting. High turnover could make baitfish more profitable than foodfish production.

1. Characterization of Pond Effluents and Biological and Physicochemical Assessment of Receiving Waters in Ghana Baseline for aquaculture production to document nutrient used & effluent discharge Develop awareness, best management practices, sustainability strategies, and environmental regulations/guidelines for aquaculture Specific Projects Virginia Tech/KNUST

1. Development of a sustainable Tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) culture in Tanzania Develop feed supplements from local plant species Moringa oleifera, Leucaena leucocephala, Jatropha curcas and Sesbania sesban as protein sources for tilapia feed Specific Projects UAPB/SUA, Tanzania

1. On farm verification of Tilapia-catfish predation culture in Tanzania Validate de Graaf et al (2005) recommendations for the production of Nile tilapia in a mixed-sex or mono- sex cultures and with or without African catfish ( Clarias garieoinus ) predation through on-farm trials. Develop management protocol, & identify potential policy options and extension support for Nile tilapia- catfish culture Specific Projects UAPB/SUA, Tanzania
