6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers Introduction This presentation will cover the following topics: Purpose Purpose Description Description Phase I Overview Phase I Overview Phase II Overview Phase II Overview Phase III Transition Phase III Transition

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers ISSUE: Aerosol cans are costly to dispose of and take up valuable storage space on ships. GOAL: Reduce disposal costs and required storage space. Safely dispose of aerosol cans. BENEFITS: Required waste storage is reduced as much as 75%. Reduces disposal costs. Safely processes aerosol cans. Minimal maintenance required. Scrap steel can be disposed of as recyclable metal. Purpose of Project

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers ISSUE REQUIREMENTS/NEEDS: Reduce Spent Aerosol Can Storage Space Reduce Waste Handling and Disposal Costs Improve Waste Handling and Storage Practices Commercial Equipment Scalable to a Broad Range of Vessel Classes Both in Future and Retro-Fit Applications CAPABILITY REQUIRED CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY CURRENT STATUSEXIT CRITERIA Puncturing Evacuating Compaction Collection Prototype feasibility and function testing Shipboard and pier- side testing - Verify performance expectations On schedule / on budget Starting Initial Production Run Occupational Health and Safety Testing Completed Aerosol Can Puncturing, Compacting and Waste Separation from Recyclable Steel Can Low Operation and Maintenance Costs Laboratory Prototype Testing Completed Aerosol Can Disposal System

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers Phase I Objectives Develop the initial concept and design of a shipboard voiding device and subsequent containment of voided material, including measures of safety and environmental performance. The design shall include means to accomplish both the voiding operation and the subsequent handling and containment of voided material and propellant shipboard and ashore until disposal is accomplished. Prepare test plans to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and design.

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers Phase II Objectives Develop, fabricate, test and demonstrate an upgraded prototype shipboard voiding device and related containment based upon the Phase I design. Test and demonstration data should be collected and analyzed for compliance with applicable performance parameters and environmental regulations. Demonstrate the ability of shipboard personnel to operate the device and containment, and their ability to measure device and containment performance including cost and emissions over ship deployment. Based upon the demonstration, complete an initial design of a production unit for Navy acceptance, submitting a manufacturability analysis and a design disclosure for Navy acceptance.

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers Safety Testing Unit safety testing was accomplished on 12-10-03 by a PA/OSHA certified Industrial Hygiene Consultant. The tests measured residual exposure to the operator. The collected data was within the approved industry standard exposure limits set by both the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers This table is the data collected for two specific locations of the sampling tubes, the operator and the filter vent. This table correlates with graphs 1 and 2. The table above shows the results of the short term exposure limit data collected. This table is illustrated on the third graph. Test Results

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers Initial Production Run The initial production design has been finalized. The construction / manufacturing drawings are complete and have been released for production. The Leiss Tool and Die Company located in Somerset, Pennsylvania was chosen as the manufacturing source. The initial ten (10) units were produced by Leiss Tool and Die Company. The units have been assembled and packed for shipment to the locations specified by the U. S. Navy.

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers U. S. Navy Placement and Usage Ten (10) units will be sent to the U.S. Navy for implementation and evaluation. The locations chosen for placement should represent a diverse variety of workload and personnel. KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR PLACEMENT:  Amount of Aerosol Cans Processed Daily: Locations that generate various amounts of spent cans to process.  Physical Location of Unit placement: i.e. Aboard ship, dockside, etc.  Number of Personnel Interacting with the Equipment: A Diverse group of operators.

6/5/2016 PEO Aircraft Carriers Phase III Transition or Commercialization Strategy Processing equipment for discharging and containing aerosol can contents would be applicable to the commercial cruise line industry, any company utilizing large amounts of aerosol generated products, and possibly the home/residential industry (public waste collection facilities).
