15 Statistical Capacity Building Programme OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES OIC StatCaB Programme is realised through following five steps: Step 1: Collecting the information from NSOs through questionnaires sent by the Centre every year, Step 2: Assessing the needs and capacities of each NSOs based on the information provided by NSOs, Step 3: Planning training programmes by matching NSOs with each other according to their responses, Step 4: Implementing training programmes by organising short courses or workshops in the Member Countries, Step 5: Evaluating the outcomes and impacts of training programmes for future improvement.

22 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Statistical Working Group (SWG)  The SWG was established in 2008.  The objectives of SWG are:  To develop a framework for coordinating statistical activities among the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Institutions and the National Statistical Organizations (NSOs) of the member countries to ensure consistency in statistical practices, prevent duplications and facilitate improved interaction with the member countries.  To identify the procedures and guidelines for OIC-level data collection, data processing, data dissemination, statistical publications and statistical capacity building activities. The development of a coordination mechanism for achieving greater synergy in the area of statistics among the OIC Institutions and the NSOs of the member countries.

23 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Statistical Working Group (SWG)  The members of the SWG  The founding institutions of the SWG (SESRIC, IDB, OIC General Secretariat, ICDT and ICCI) are natural members of the SWG. The membership of SWG is open to all OIC Institutions with statistical responsibilities.  National Statistical Organizations of the OIC member countries can become member of the SWG without any reservation, or participate in the SWG meetings without becoming a member.  The first meeting of the SWG has been organized by the IDB in Jeddah on 25-26 March, 2008.  The second meeting will be organized by SESRIC in 2009.

24 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Publications In the first part of the yearbook, which is newly included this year, trends for some of the important indicators are presented mostly in graphical format under two categories; demographic and social trends and economic trends. The second part is consisted of 110 indicators which are classified accordingto major socio- economic areas for the period from 1997 to 2006. The categories are Demography, Labor Force, Health, Education, Agriculture, Energy, Transportation, Communication, Tourism, Exports, Imports, Public Finance, Money and Prices, National Accounts and International Finance. In the third part 23 selected key indicators are reported for each of the 57 OIC Member Countries for the same period from 1997 to 2006. While determining the indicators, availability of data for each Member Country played a crucial role. Statistical Yearbook, 2007

25 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Publications The report provides an evaluation of the recent developments of education in the member countries. It discusses the current situation in the OIC member countries and the progress made to ensure access to primary education and its completion and examines the developments in secondary and higher education. The report also explores the commitments of the member countries to invest in education at various levels. It highlights some of the achievements of the member countries in improving the quality of education and their contributions to research in various fields of academic interest. Finally the report contains a section including comprehensive country profiles of the member countries on various education-related variables and a brief review of the progress made by the OIC member countries towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education. 26 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Publications The report analyses the economic situation in the OIC member countries during the latest five-year period for which the data are available. The 2008 report also analyses the trends in the major economic indicators of the OIC countries in the light of the robust rate of growth in the world economy, which started in the early 2000s and continued in 2007. The report highlights the issue of the increases in world food and oil prices and their implications for the OIC member countries. Finally, it highlights a number of challenges confronting the OIC member countries in their efforts to further their economic progress and proposes a set of recommendations to serve as policy guidelines for enhancing the development efforts of the OIC member countries. 27 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Publications The report aims at analyzing the developments in the economies of the 22 OIC members which are least-developed countries and highlighting their specific problems, thereby pointing to the need for special actions in their favor, particularly in the financial, commercial and technical cooperation areas. It examines the trends in their major economic indicators in the latest five-year period for which the data are available and compares them with those in the groups of all least- developed countries and developing countries. It also sheds light on some development issues of immediate concern to these countries, such as external financial flows, official development assistance, external debt, human development and poverty eradication. 28 OIC ANKARA SESRIC STATISTICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTRE FOR ISLAMIC COUNTRIES Press Releases  SESRIC is distributing selected press releases of NSOs via its web site. http://www.sesric.org/nsonews_archive.php  Currently the press releases of only 11 NSOs are available.  This section will be developed due to an increase in number of received releases from NSOs.
