The goal of our document is to convince Texas Tech to create a more extensive mandatory alcohol education class that will educate students on the effects of alcohol.

 Texas Tech currently has one alcohol education program. This program is called AlcholEdu.com  Our group does not believe this program provides sufficient alcohol education to college students.  If a course were mandated on campus to freshman for alcohol education, our group believes that a great deal of alcohol related accidents and arrests could be prevented.

 AlcoholEdu  Freshmen are required to complete an online education course before Fall classes begin  Students cannot register for Spring classes until the online course is complete  3 hour online course  Students must earn at least 80% on the online exam in order to complete the program

 The consequences of excessive and underage drinking affect virtually all college campuses, college communities, and college students, whether they choose to drink or not. Academic Problems: About 25 percent of college students report academic consequences of their drinking including missing class, falling behind, doing poorly on exams or papers, and receiving lower grades overall (Engs et al., 1996; Presley et al., 1996a, 1996b; Wechsler et al., 2002).Engs et al., 1996; Presley et al., 1996a, 1996b;Wechsler et al., 2002 Drunk Driving: 2.1 million students between the ages of 18 and 24 drove under the influence of alcohol last year (Hingson et al., 2002).Hingson et al., 2002 Police Involvement: About 5 percent of 4-year college students are involved with the police or campus security as a result of their drinking (Wechsler et al., 2002) and an estimated 110,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are arrested for an alcohol- related violation such as public drunkenness or driving under the influence (Hingson et al., 2002).Wechsler et al., 2002Hingson et al., 2002 Death: 1,700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes (Hingson et al., 2005).Hingson et al., 2005

 We decided to address this proposal to Elmo M. Cavin. Mr. Cavin is the Interim President of the Texas Tech University Health Science Center. We chose to address our proposal to Mr. Cavin because he play an important role in implementing our proposal.  Our group decided to focus our proposal on statistics directly related to college students. We chose to do this because we are directing this proposal specifically to Texas Tech University.

 Hillary-Organization, writing  Erin-Editing, writing  Jaime-Research, presentation aids  Lari Dee- Research, communication responsibilities

 Communication- Our group has had problems getting in touch with each other at certain times. Our main way to communicate is through E-mail. This can be hard since some people check their E-mail more frequently than others.  Conflicting Schedules- Everyone has different schedules. This makes it hard for the group to find a common time to meet up. We have managed to get around these time conflicts and meet together several times over the course of the project.

 Problem: Lack of alcohol education at Texas Tech.  Group thoughts: Our group believes that many alcohol related problems that can come in college could be prevented by a mandatory alcohol education program. We hope that Texas Tech creates a mandatory course credit class on campus for alcohol education.
