Power Writing Technique You are going to your Spring break. You've already chosen a gorgeous resort for your vacation, but hesitate about the kind of transport you'll take for your trip. You are not quite sure what way of traveling is more comfortable and suitable: a bus or an airplane. Compare or contrast these two means of transportation. Explain only one of the points of comparisons or contrasts. You have only five minutes. Count your words.

Compare and Contrast Essay A compare/contrast essay is a piece of writing that shows points of similarities or differences between two things, people or places. Purpose: To persuade, explain or inform. In other words: To determine the superiority of one thing over another. Comparing/Contrasting between two things, items, people countries or schools.

Compare Contrast Show the similarities e.g. Both sisters are pretty, intelligent and polite (How they are alike). Show the Differences Two forms of government A kingdom and a republic A Mercedes and a Hyundai

You have to be selective when you pick the points of comparison according to the most significant to support your central idea. Two politicians: 1. taste of food or appearance (don’t help persuade on who is a better leader). 2. Who is a better public server. 3. Who is a better politician when it comes to foreign policies.

When you Compare or contrast, there are several points to consider e.g. Two people

Organization of Comparison/Contrast Essay There are two basic patterns of organization for developing the comparison and contrast essay. 1. Point- by- point First, think of important factors to compare or contrast. For example, to compare and contrast two jobs to apply for one, consider the factors related like: the salary, benefits, and the commuting distance. Write about the salary and allowances (transportation, housing, etc.) in both places in one paragraph. Then move to another point of comparison or contrast in the next paragraph like the commuting distance and how easy or hard it is to get to each place. After that, move to a different point and show its similarities or differences in both places like the benefits (the pension plan, the health insurance and so on.)

2. All of one/ All of the other. It is also called the Block Organization. In this pattern a writer must list all of the points of comparison or contrast about the first party in one paragraph then move to write about all of the same points on the other party. Writing about fashion in the past in one paragraph and fashion these days in the following paragraph.

Transitions for comparison and contrast Are used to give writing coherence and to show its unity to allow it to move smoothly from one idea to the next. To show similarities: likewise, similarly, in the same way. To indicate difference: on the other hand, conversely, in contrast, however, but, yet, On the contrary ( to show that the other idea can not be true.)
