What is OpenWetWare? How are researchers using the site? Challenges / Future

What is OpenWetWare? 2200 registered users (capable of editing) ~1M pageviews/month 150K unique sessions / month 85 labs 17 courses The goals of OWW are to support open research, education, publication, and discussion in biological sciences and engineering. We promote and support collaborations among researchers, students, and others who are working towards these goals.

How are researchers using the site? Publishing (sort of) Communities Let’s see the site! http://openwetware.org/wiki/OpenWetWare:Presentations/Nature

Why building scientific communities on the web is hard. Scientists are busy Social norms against distribution of unpolished work Fear of being ‘scooped’ by competitors

OWW Challenges Technical –Data organization –Unique author identifiers –Ease of use (DB front ends, WYSIWYG) Social –Scientific merit structure –Secrecy / privacy –Make online scientific networking mainstream

Lessons from our experience Integrate sharing into the work flow of scientists. –options for sharing information about a paper should be on the page I download the paper from. Be flexible –we allow snack schedules (and lab music videos). Share by default –make it harder to not share than to share. Plant seeds –The best advertisement is good use cases. So encourage early adopters to provide good examples. Etiquette rather than code –If edits are tracked then we don’t need code to enforce civility on the site, it can be done socially.

Nature’s current mission The mission of the Nature Publishing Group is to become the premier scientific publisher, focusing always on the quality of the information we publish. NPG strives to serve scientific, technical and medical communities by delivering dynamic and audience-focused web services. Our goal is to become the first choice of scientists in search of (1) ground-breaking original research that has been rigorously and rapidly peer-reviewed; (2) superior review, filtering and navigating material; (3) the most relevant career information; and (4) timely and essential breaking news.

Nature’s original mission It is intended, FIRST, to place before the general public the grand results of Scientific Work and Scientific Discovery; and to urge the claims of Science to a more general recognition in Education and in Daily Life; and, SECONDLY, to aid Scientific men themselves, by giving early information of all advances made in any branch of Natural knowledge throughout the world, and by affording them an opportunity of discussing the various Scientific questions which arise from time to time.
