2008 EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project Geospatial Metadata: Intermediate Course Module 1: Introduction and Standards Overview

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 2 Training Structure Intermediate Training Modules 1.Brief recap of introductory session (this module) a.The FGDC CSDGM and compliancy b.Metadata Development Solutions Developing a ‘metadata implementation’ Using templates & tools c.NAP of ISO 19139/19115 2.How to use the EPA Metadata Editor (EME) a.Customizing the EME for your needs (State of North Carolina example) 3.Metadata Catalogs and sharing 4.Registering and using Geospatial One Stop (GOS) Pre-training information Samples & Surveys Demonstrations Review questions (with prizes) Example: what are we talking about today? Last week’s winner: Nicole Kennedy, North Carolina!!

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 3 Learning Objectives After completing the intermediate training the student can: Identify the basics of FGDC structure and compliancy Describe what’s next with the ISO 19115/19139 standard Describe how to use the EME Describe how the EME can be customized for different needs Describe some options for sharing metadata and list some pros and cons of each Describe how to access and use Geospatial One Stop It is assumed that the student already has a basic background in: What FGDC CSDGM is and how it is structured What’ FGDC compliancy’ means Additional information on these 2 topics is available in the introductory course

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 5 Recap of Introductory Session What is the FGDC CSDGM? Metadata standard published in June 1994 by FGDC and updated in 1998. Comprised of 10 ‘sections’  7 major sections and 3 supporting sections Sections contain compound elements and data elements  Compound elements contain other elements  Data elements contain data  334 elements in the standard  Many are “free text” More information: http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/geospatial- metadata-standards http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/geospatial- metadata-standards

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 6 Recap of Introductory Session FGDC has established some minimum requirements for metadata Sections and elements classified as mandatory, mandatory if applicable, and optional To be considered FGDC-compliant a metadata record must:  Include all mandatory sections (sections 1 and 7)  Include all mandatory elements within each section  Use the correct format (e.g., dates) and information (e.g., update frequency) where applicable  Contain the correct number of elements Metadata can be tested for compliancy using metaparser  http://geo-nsdi.er.usgs.gov/validation/ http://geo-nsdi.er.usgs.gov/validation/ Common errors may include  Missing elements, especially with compound elements  Misplaced elements  Unknown Extension Errors (“Warnings”)  Bad Values

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 7 Recap of Introductory Session Beyond FGDC Compliancy FGDC Compliancy is not the only consideration for developing high quality metadata  A perfectly compliant record may be useless if it suffers from Not enough content Inaccurate content Out of date content Spelling errors Incorrect online linkage Other ‘compliancy’ considerations  Geospatial One Stop (GOS)  Catalog implementations with validation turned “on”  Agency Requirements/Needs Combination of requirements may be confusing

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 8 Recap of Introductory Session Metadata Development Solutions Implementations  Improve consistency: standardize how a group produces metadata  Define wording for some free-text fields; may have additional requirements  Include all requirements in one standard Templates  Save time: provide defaults for information common to multiple datasets  Easy to use and import into ArcCatalog or other tools Tools  Different tools available may satisfy different needs: Freeware or commercial? Desktop or web-based? Integrated with ESRI products? Types of files in need of metadata? Automated pick lists & defaults? Clear requirements? Support for all FGDC CSDGM fields? Easy access to support/help?

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 9 Recap of Introductory Session The North American Profile (NAP) of ISO19115/19139 What is the NAP?  ‘Next generation’ geospatial metadata standard for CAN and US  A ‘community profile’ of the ISO 19115/19139 standard international standard for geospatial metadata ISO is the International Organization for Standardization  Provides interoperability between US and international community  Increases capabilities/flexibility Similar to the FGDC CSDGM, but different  Structure: classes, subclasses, attributes, and domains  Requirements: both require only identification information and metadata information  Content: Contains more fixed domains and code lists; fewer mandatory elements  Terminology: Mandatory, Conditional, Optional  Applicability: Can be applied to a greater range of products What is planned for the NAP?  Current status: final review  Early 2009: targeted completion  Resources planned for roll-out may include translators, crosswalks, training, editors

EPA and Partners Metadata Training Program: 2008 CAP Project 11 FGDC CSDGM Structure Quiz What does the FGDC CSDGM not contain? A.Classes B.Elements C.Compound elements D.All of the above What would be a consideration for developing a metadata implementation? A.Requirements for contributing to various sharing efforts B.Agency/organizational requirements C.FGDC requirements D.All of the above FGDC CSDGM Basics
